Outgoing and short, Nagakura is Captain of the second unit, and seems like another (less-aggressive) version of Tetsu.
Nagakura and Harada Sanosuke are very close friends, and the two are rarely seen far from each other.
Nagakura, Harada and Toudou Heisuke make up what the Shinsengumi call the 'Comedian Three' (or the "comic trio", or the "three stooges").

Bio: While Shinpachi might not exactly be considered a bishounen, he *is* a red-head.
One of the "comedic trio", Shinpachi is the captain of the 2nd unit of the Shinsengumi.
He is based on a real historical figure (as are most of the Shinsengumi characters), and was one of the only Shinsengumi members to survive the bakumatsu (the other being Saito).

I went over the outline of Shinpachi's rope + tassle with the white charcoal to much, their hair is uffy..

There were also many frequenters at the dojo who take their meals there (like Sano frequenting the Kamiya Dojo), among them Yamanami Seisuke, Harada Sanosuke and Nagakura Shinpachi.
When Kondou and Hijikata heard of the formation of Roshitais in Kyoto and being the patriotic hunks that they were, they went to Kyoto with a few other disciples of Tennen Rishin Ryuu (including all of the above named), leaving the dojo in the care of Hijikata's elder brother.
His most powerful sword skill is the "Left-hand single thrust" (but *not* Gatotsu, that's Watsuki-san's creation), this skill is even more destructive than Okita's 3-piece thrust! In fact, Saitou, together with Okita and Nagakura, were hailed as the 3 strongest swordsman of the Shinsengumi.

Nagakura lived to narrate these and other events in his Jitsureki dan (Discussion of True History; later published as Shinsengumi tenmatsu ki, or A Full Account of the Shinsengumi).
This parting of ways was based on strategic differences, however; Nagakura seems to have harbored no resentment toward Kondô and Hijikata that would have compelled him to fabricate the foregoing account.
Indeed, before he died, Nagakura erected the memorial gravestones to Kondô and Hijikata that still stand near Itabashi Station in Tokyo.

Was born in a tenement house of a Daimyo at Shimotani Edo, to a Matsumae retainer named Nagakura Kanji
In 1870, he goes to Fukuyama in Hokkaido as the son-in-law (also adopted son) of the feudal clan doctor, Nagakura was now known as Sugimura Yoshie.
He inherits the head of the family in May 1875.
