Nagaland was conquered by the British late in the 19th century and was annexed to India.
Delhi believes that the great majority of the people of Nagaland have been sufficiently convinced that war is futile, which in turn would act as a deterrent on Naga independence movement, preventing it from going back to war.
While endorsing the principle of self-determination of all subject people, the Peace Mission suggested that the Naga underground could “on their own volition, decide to be a participant in the Union of India and mutually settle the terms and conditions for that purpose”.

The party also said the credibility, efficiency and competency of the Nagaland Police was beyond doubt and that the state force has the inherent ability to face and tackle any eventuality and capable enough to protect and defend its citizens.
The party said it was very unfortunate that an organization which claims itself to be championing the cause of the people, was confining itself into a "cocoon of habitually issuing illogical and malicious statements in the news media against individuals, groups and government."

The Naga Peoples Front (NPF), reportedly a legitimate front of the NSCN (IM), projected itself as principally committed to bringing peace to the state, has succeeded in forming the government in alliance with the BJP despite coming second.
In Tripura, despite the claims of the victorious Left Front that its mandate is for peace, it is pertinent to note that the same ensemble of left parties had been in power for the past decade or so, but the security, law and order and insurgency situation in the state remains grave.

 20 hurt in firing by Samata activists in Nagaland
At least 20 people were injured when Samata Party supporters allegedly fired at villagers during campaigning for the February 26 assembly polls by a Congress candidate at a village in Mokochung district in Nagaland, official sources said in Kohima on Saturday.
Earlier on Tuesday, 30 persons were injured in clashes between supporters of the Congress and Nagaland Peoples Front at Khar village in the same district, the sources said adding 10 government employees were arrested in this connection from the village, of which NPF secretary general Chubatemjen Ao is a native.
The Indian Reserve Battalion was deployed in Jangpetkong assembly constituency, under which the two villages fall, since campaigning began because of the close proximity of the Dishoi valley on the Assam-Nagaland border where the NSCN (I-M) is active.
