Nagant started out with various Remington mechanisms in all shapes and forms, but the first "true" Nagant revolver came already in 1878.
The Kongsberg Nagants were virtually unmarked and only had the serialnumber and an approval mark (I would love to get hold of one of those).
The picture shows a boks of military Nagant cartridges dated 1927 and I am rather at a loss over why the Nagants seemingly still were in use at that late date.

In the 1890's the Mosin Nagant Model 1891 made its first appearance in Estonia, replacing the older Berdan rifles issued to Russian troops and Estonians serving in the Russian Army.
The Mosin Nagant was the standard issue rifle to all Imperial Russian troops and garrison soldiers of this time period.
There are examples of Finnish made Mosin Nagants that have scrubbed markings and have a large E stamped on the barrel shank or receiver, and it was these rifles that were thought to have been sent secretly to Estonia.

The rifle was originally the "winner" of a competition in Imperial Russia meant to replace the antiquated Berdan rifles then in use (which were single-shot breech-loading rifles, similar to the British Martini rifle).
Sergei Ivanovich Mosin submitted a design, which was combined with that of the design of the Belgian designer Leon Nagant (which the army had favored) to pander to Russia's national pride, and the resulting rifle, the Mosin Nagant Model 1891 was accepted for service.
The cartridge it was designed for, the Russian 7.62x54R, has been in service continuously since its adoption, and remains so to this day.

I think the book was written because most Nagants are made up of parts from various years.
Much of the book specifically describes Russian/Soviet and Finnish Mosin Nagants, although there are plenty of descriptions covering Mosin Nagant rifles from other East European nations, China, and others.
As with any book of this type there are a few errors, such as insisting that the Finns used some sort of potassium permangenate stain on their stocks -- most experts, many in Finland, disagree with that and Lapin has yet (as far as I know) to produce any documentation that spells that out.
