Nagaoka is located at longitude 138° E and latitude 37° N. The size of Nagaoka increased on April 1, 2005, when the town of Oguni, the village of Yamakoshi, the town of Nakanoshima, the town of Koshiji, and the town of Mishima in were absorbed into the city of Nagaoka.
Nagaoka flourished as a castle town under the reign of the 13 generations of the Makino clan of the Edo period.
Prior to the merger, the size of Nagaoka was 262.45 km² and the population was 192,292.

NIIGATA (Kyodo) House of Councilors member Naoki Tanaka and his support group have filed suit against Fuji Television Network Inc., demanding an apology and 20 million yen in compensation for psychological damage they claimed they suffered as a result of video shots taken through a hidden camera during his election campaign.
According to the suit filed with the Nagaoka branch of the Niigata District Court, the plaintiffs allege that Fuji TV set up a video recorder in a house across from Tanaka's campaign headquarters in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, and had continuously recorded footage of the headquarters' entrance since mid-June.
Tanaka is running in Sunday's Upper House election for a seat in the Niigata electoral district.
