On April 1, 2005, the town of Oguni in Kariwa District, the village of Yamakoshi in Koshi District, the town of Nakanoshima in Minamikanbara District and the towns of Koshiji and Mishima in Santo District were absorbed into the city of Nagaoka.
On March 1, 2004, the city of Ryotsu and the towns of Aikawa, Hamochi, Hatano, Kanai, Mano, Ogi and Sawata and the villages of Akadomari and Niibo in Sado District merged to form the city of Sado.
On January 1, 2005, the town of Yasuzuka and the villages of Maki, Oshima and Uragawara in Higashikubiki District, the towns of Itakura, Kakizaki, Ogata and Yoshikawa and the villages of Kiyosato, Kubiki, Nakagou and Sanwa in Nakakubiki District and the town of Nadachi in Nishikubiki District were absorbed into the city of Joetsu.

Intra-prefectural moves are mostly accounted for by moves to the city of Niigata and to Nagaoka, and inter-prefectural moves are mostly to destinations such as Tokyo, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Saitama Prefecture.
Tokamachi, with a 3.7% population decline, was second only to Sado (4%) in the prefecture and is a far cry from the experience of Niigata Prefecture as a whole, which is experiencing a slight increasing trend.
The thirty-year population decline in the Tokamachi region was a substantial 38%, which was also experienced by Sado.

Despite my early morning delay, I was very well on schedule and took the 18:20 ferry from Niigata to Ryotsu on Sado Island.
The campground, if you can call it one, consisted of a tiny shrine on a little cape jutting out into the large lake next to Ryotsu, bordered on both sides by Sado's two central mountain chains.

He ends up annihirating the whole clan, but the killing of a child leaves a deep scar in Musashi.
