  About Nagapattinam
The Nagapattinam district lies on the east coast to the south of Cuddalore district and another part of the Nagapattinam district lies to the south of Karaikkal and Tiruvarur districts.
Thanjavur district and Tiruvarur district flank it on the west and on the south and east it is bordered by the Bay of Bengal.
Temperature: The average maximum temperature for the district (from 1991 to 1996)as a whole is about 32.460 C and the average minimum temperature is 24.750C.

NAGAPATTINAM : Nagapattinam district has suffered a loss of Rs.58 crores except agriculture in the nine-day rain havoc from November 1 to 9.
Radhakrishnan said that the district had experienced torrential rains for nine days from November 1 to 9 and the average rainfall was 524 mm.
The Collector said that in all 14 persons died in the rain in various parts of the district and pointed out that about 1.34 lakh people were evacuated from 500 villages and hamlets and were provided shelter and food in 55 relief centres.

Actually, the man most familiar to the tsunami victims in Nagapattinam district, which took a hit at 77 places along the 187.9 km coastline and lost 6,063 people, was not even the Collector of that district on that eventful day.
The district Collector had his moment when the parents who had lost their children in the fire at the Kumbakonam school in July last year, came to him with a contribution of Rs 1.03 lakh.

NAGAPATTINAM: The Tamil Nadu government and the district authorities busy grappling with the problems of resettling tsunami-affected people have another group to contend with-the agricultural labourers, dalits.
Vedaranyam,Velankanni and Ganapattanam are the three worst affected villages.There are about 136 dalit hamlets with 7,000 to 10,000 dalits rendered jobless in the Nagapattinam district awaiting recognition and aid from the government and the numerous NGOs operating in the area.
The fate of the dalits will be decided by the district authorities, at a later date, who have barely acknowledged their problems.

Kuppuraj, a tsunami survivor, can be sighted at Nagapattinam town everyday waiting for a bus to the nearby Karaikal part of the Union Territory of Pondicherry to buy liquor and other articles at reduced rates.
There are many Kuppurajs in this tsunami-ravaged district, who, without any proper directive to utilise the money they receive as compensation, are wasting it on liquor and frivolous activities.
On the other hand, the tsunami has revived the business of local traders, taxi operators and hotel owners in Nagapattinam and adjoining areas, as the tragedy has brought in a number of NGOs, volunteers and media persons to the town.

The toll in the tsunami disaster in the coastal district of Nagapattinam has touched 4,500 with the extrication of nearly 2,000 more corpses in the past 24 hours till this afternoon.
The majority of the 2,300 bodies were recovered in Nagapattinam taluk comprising Velankanni and Nagapattinam coastal areas followed by 1,350 in Kilvelur, 90 in Vedaranyam, 370 in Tharangampadi and 450 in Sirkazhi taluks.
Two Navy helicopters were being used for relief operations in the coastal areas in the district and army personnel were removing the mechanised fishing trawlers that had landed on the Nagore-Nagapattinam rail track and also on the beach road in Nagapattinam.
