  Nagini - HarmonyForever
From cannon we are told that Nagini is Voldemort's pet snake, she was milked so Voldemort could live although lord knows why and how, and she supposedly protects 1/7 of Voldemort's soul.
According to Hindu mythology, Nagini is a female term for a Naga.
I say that JKR is holding out and a large shocker probably could be that Nagini actually is a Nagini, and will turn into her half human form and explain how Voldemort nursed from her.

Nagini is the first to notice Frank Bryce, the house's gardener, and uses the language parseltongue (the language of snakes) to communicate with Voldemort and alert him to Bryce's presence.
It is unknown what true species of snake Nagini is, though she is believed to be venomous, due to the fact that Voldemort refers to her donating her venom to the potion that brings him back to life in the fourth book.

Clearing the Cobwebs [Eva - open to Drudger/Dolohov]
Nagini was coiled in the sunlight, her golden eyes transfixed and pointed at the dingy window, as if waiting for it to burst open for a nice escape.
Nagini was, in fact, far to moble to approach anyone on command, except for her master; even if it was her second favorite human around.
Nagini had taken to following her everywhere lately, and of course the attic was rather eerie what with the old torture cages and rusty swords draped in cobwebs.

 Horcruxes - The Sugar Quill
I must admit Nagini is a good choice for a horcrux; she certainly seems to be more than the average snake to Voldemort.
Nagini is always in close promimity to Voldemort, which defeats the purpose of having multiple horcruxes hidden seperately from each other.
Whether or not Nagini is a horcrux, Dumbledore clearly believes it is possible so if a snake can be a horcrux I would expect a human could also be one.

May be with Nagini's venom he was able to conjure up some weak form of shell to inhabit...
This would explain why Nagini the snake would have been made into a horcrux as it enabled her to be used to revive him to from spirit form to an odd fetus-like form.
Nagini could have been made into one while he was in the weak fetal-form just out of his obcession with having exactly seven horcruxes and not knowing yet that he was already down to five due to the diary being destroyed.

 NAGINI : Encyclopedia Entry
During the fourth year Harry spends at Hogwarts, Voldemort's temporary body was sustained by Nagini's "milk" (presumably her venom), harvested by Peter Pettigrew (known as Wormtail).
He saw this from Nagini's point of view, and felt as though he himself was the snake: Dumbledore explained this as being due to Harry's connection to Voldemort (who was possessing Nagini at the time).
Given the unusual properties of her venom it is highly likely she is a magically altered or wizard-bred variety of cobra, though in the film version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, she is depicted as some form of Python.

Re: Nagini is a Horcrux, and she may well be the key to destroying Voldemort.
As far as Nagini is concerned, she may be the last Horcruxe made, Horcruxe which seems the only one really helpful as as you rightly pointed out, it fed Voldemort when this one was weak, so he had a vital importance to Voldemort (besides it's the only one Voldemort can communicate with).
Nagini may be the same snake that Harry inadvertently allows to escape to freedom at the zoo in PS.

 Horcruxes - The Sugar Quill
Nagini isn't going to die until she is killed or all the other Horcruxes are destroyed.
I think Dumbledore may have thought Nagini was a horscrux because she possibly did at one time house Voldemort's spirit, and using her venom Peter turned Voldemort into that baby like thing.
Dumbledore also says, more or less, that using a living thing (e.g., Nagini) to be a Horcrux is not ideal, because the living thing also has a consciousness and will of its own.

Now, given that Nagini is probably a magical snake, that could account for the fact that Arthur's wounds would not heal.
I would just assume, though, that Nagini is magical, since she was apparently able to keep Baby!Mort alive with her venom.
Now, if Nagini is a Horcrux (which, we can probably trust Dumbledore's intuition on that), then he would definitely treat her like gold because she is him, in a sense.

I keep thinking Nagini could be some sort of Slytherin family pet, some special kind of snake that has been round Slytherin and his heirs and is so faithful and tied to his master - but then the image of Morfin nailing a dead snake on the cottage door rises and spoils that logic completely.
Considering Nagini isn't nearly that large, it probably would not have been much of a challenge to find a hole to slither into to, or a way into the ventilation perhaps.
It's reasonable to theorise that Nagini is an animagus, but it has been established that animals generally are far more intelligent than previously determined by Muggles, and snakes seem to be one of the more intelligent species, based on two distinct snakes being able to "converse" with Parselmouths...

In the Chinese (Taiwan) translation, Nagini allows Wormtail to milk her for a kind of juice, most probably snake venom.

Nagini is quite possibly Voldemort's most loyal follower, the giant snake who appears with him for the first time in Goblet of Fire.
In The Order of the Phoenix, Nagini shows just this type of spirit when she breaks into the ministry building and attacks Aurthur Weasley as he guarded the Department of Mysteries.
There is now a very strong suspicion that Nagini is so loyal because she is actually one of Voldemort's horcruxes, and therefore is actually a piece of Voldemort himself.
