During Ragnarök, Naglfar will be freed from the land by a flood and sail to Vagrond, the battlefield, by Hymir along with an army of giants.
In Philip Reeve's novel Infernal Devices Naglfar is the name of the submarine used by Uncle (the leader of the lost boys) to rehabilitate Grimsby.

Having enjoyed the band's demo and previous two albums, it is easy to vouch for the durability of the genuine death metal that Naglfar has consistently composed and delivered.
Naglfar has never hidden its Dissection influences and those are as present today as they were on days one.
Naglfar is best when it cranks up the frenzied guitars, as on Unleash Hell (also the title of a song on the current Vital Remains album) or Force Of Pandemonium, and should consider incorporating more lead work into the pandemonium.

NAGLFAR was formed in 1992 by chief instigators Jens Ryden and Kristoffer Olivius.
Please remember that NAGLFAR is meant purely for listeners who are able to confront the powers of darkness...as their name is also the moniker of the cruise vessel that will carry us all to Ragnarok (and world downfall!).
NAGLFAR, a band who has been spending the last few years sharpening their skills, and slicing through the competition is poised and ready to reek havoc on all who dare listen!!

Naglfar also recognizes the benefits of occasionally opening the texture up a tad, to let the parts breathe and, to reference Beavis and Butthead, make the heavier parts that much heavier, as in the track “Abysmal Descent”.
Perhaps Naglfar has finally found a middle ground between the gritty atmosphere of the original Norse Black Metallers and the polished and airbrushed clarity that the Dimmus and Cradles seem to cultivate.
To be fair, though, I think that Naglfar’s restraint involving keyboards has a lot to do with this, as they don’t saturate their music with crystal clear Korg tones and they also haven’t invited Nick Barker to bring over his triggered click-kit and lay down some tracks.

This fine Swedish quintet caught my attention with their 1995 release "Vittra", which was and still is considered as one of the finest outputs in the genre.

Naglfar has never been one for vocals, and many would find Jens Ryden's singing ability to be sub-standard at best.

When it comes to Norwegians Naglfar, the two things you most need to know are that for one, you may have to wait a long time for material, but it usually ends up being killer, not filler.
To top it all off, because of only one or two songs in their catalogue, already they have been relegated to Viking metal status, even while the bulk of their material is nowhere near earning that distinction.
The story goes like this: Naglfar is the ship of death that brings the warriors to Hel (Norse spelling).

NAGLFAR successfully combine the raging speed of Swedish fl metal and brutal force with nearly dreamlike, melancholic moments as well as intricate guitar-work to the point to which Jens added his characteristically raw voice.
It takes NAGLFAR some time before they finally enlist Mattias Grahn as a permanent Master of Beats to their ranks, which causes a delay of three years before they go on to release the successor "Diabolical".
In the wake of NAGLFAR's glorious debut expectations run naturally high, but instead of simply repeating their winning formula the band opts for a small yet decisive change of course: "Diabolical" emphasises edgy death metal parts and reduces in darkness.

While most bands are programmed into the routine of releasing an album per year, touring, relaxing for a month and then repeating the process, Naglfar are the embodiment of 'quality over quantity'.
First, not only is the hype of the fans dying for new material heightened, but the material itself has been re-worked and refined until it stands at the highest quality possible.

I have always appreciated the overdose of adrenaline Naglfar infuses in their music, and "Pariah" is certainly no exception, but after a few spins I must conclude that this CD is not the pinnacle of their collection.
Naglfar are back with another vicious melodic fl metal album in the vein of classic Dissection and Dark Funeral.
But I Digress, with a decent mix behind them, Naglfar is finally able to shine and it is obvious to see what they have been so capable of all of these years.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Diabolical - Naglfar at Epinions.com
What I am saying, is simply that the musical ideas presented here by Naglfar are fairly simplistic, straight-forward expressions derived from the established standards of melodic fl metal, everything from the minor chord progressions and repeated structure, to the screamed verse/chorus lines and drum tempos.
The guitar riffing of Naglfar isn't mind-blowing or very challenging at all, but I don't mean that in a way that undermines their musical ability or the quality of their material.
To conclude this review, Naglfar 'Diabolical' is an overall solid piece of aggressive, melodic fl metal with a good, clear production that sharpens the edges of these unholy instrumental weapons.

Such is the case with "12'th Rising" which undoubtedly is my favorite Naglfar song and "Blades", which is the album's shortest (non-instrumental) song and one that goes straight for your jugular.
Naglfar recently gained a lot attention because of their last release Sheol, which was a good album but it lacked longevity.

Though the interim between recordings was filled with frustrations the core of the classic Naglfar group has headbutted their way to the top of a ravenous pack and will likely join in on the greatest rewards of Death / Black / Doom Metal’s commercial ascendance.
Naglfar uses its penchant for the progressive so brilliantly and brutally that they can come off as sonic sadists in one measure while damn near caressing the gates of Hell (Sheol) the next, 'Abysmal Descent' being the best example for the phenomena.
While Cradle of Filth are breaking into a wider commercial consciousness with their latest Naglfar will follow on behind and present another facet of the formerly underground Metal scene, not opposed mind you, just independent and oh-so uncompromised.

It has been over five years since NAGLFAR's "Diabolical" album was first released in the U.S. so it seems none too surprising that it would get a re-release now.
Yes, they have many of the song structures that make death metal such a powerful musical entity but their bread and butter is the tinny riffs and screechy vocals epitomized by the neo-fl artists.
NAGLFAR don't do anything wrong per se, they just travel such a well worn path that it is boring.

After a five-year wait, NAGLFAR's third album, Sheol (Hebrew for "hell") treads through a blurry boundary of fl and death metal that seethes in a foundation of thrash brutality, hailed by Metal Maniacs as "a monumental cataclysm of flened death metal" and destined to become one of the best albums of 2003.

Encompassing the darkest un-holy territories of Black Metal with a penchant for the morbidity of Death Metal’s unequivocal graphic nature, Naglfar’s latest endeavor, Pariah, bleeds apathy for the faint of heart and breeds absolute conviction in support of their dark manifest.
Although I do not subscribe to the philosophies propagated by Naglfar’s Pariah, I must also make clear that the musical arrangements alone are created in such a manner that the mere sounds evoke emotion and speculation that otherwise would be nonexistent in my thought life.
But for a band such as Naglfar, this only serves to be a good thing as it would truly be a crime not to let more of the world experience the tremendous resourcefulness of their music.

Naglfar doesn't push the boundaries of fl metal as much as solidify them, as Sheol contains all the elements of classic fl metal without sounding derivative.
