		A remarkable clue is provided by the existence of Nahali as an isolate language in the Narmada Valley, a valley which has assumed prominence as a neolithic precursor (ca.
		Nahali was spoken on the River Tapti, NW of Ellichpur in Madhya Pradesh.
		Nahali language (like Basque or Burushaski) is an isolate language unrelated to the Indo-European family.

		For Nahali, we assume that there was considerable mobility in a fairly extensive multilingual territory, so that such partly similar contact situations as that of Brahui or Vedda or Rodiya with massive borrowing (or deformation?) but less extensive linguistic contacts are only partly similar.
		And as Kuiper has shown the proportion of borrowed vocabulary in Nahali is very high, presumably much higher than in any of the Romani dialects (what the corresponding figures for Vedda are I can't say.) As with most everything else about the Nihals, we know little about their social or occupational history.
		If Nahali has a fundamentally Austroasiatic character, and acquired it in the usual historical linguistic ways, then my scenario is all wrong - unless the connection is remote indeed, in which case we want to hear more from Pinnow about that fundamental Austroasiatic character.

		He follows those scholars who consider the Central-Indian language isolate Nahali (assumed by its few students to be the original language of the western-Indian Bhils) as also belonging to the Austro-Asiatic family.
		This view is emphatically not shared by F.B.J. Kuiper, who lists 123 items of core vocabulary not reducible to Austro-Asiatic, Dravidian or IE roots, and calculates that “about 24 per cent of the Nahali vocabulary has no correspondence whatever in India”.
		If Kuiper is wrong, it would mean that as per the prevalent theories, not a single living language in the subcontinent (except for the peripheral languages Burushaski and Andamanese, at least for now) is indigenous.
