 [No title]
The Najadales on a whole are considered more derived, or advanced than the Hydrocharitaceae (even despite the superior ovary).
The ten families within Najadales are defined mainly by generative characteristics, however three families contain exclusively marine genera.
Three other families in Najadales contain the five brackish water genera mentioned at the beginning of this paper that are sometime allied with but not considered to be seagrasses.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Alismatidae -- Spring 1999
The evolutionary history of the Najadales is in large part a story of floral reduction associated with progressive adaptation to aquatic and eventually marine habitats.
The Najadales, as defined by him, may be differentiated from the related Alismatales and Hydrocharitales by a perianth (when present) that can be differentiated into sepals and petals.
The circumscription and definition of the Najadales are unsettled.

The Taxonomy and Phylogeny of the Angiosperms - Peter Morrell
In general terms we can see from the diagrams that the entire group is derived from a primitive Angiosperm that gave rise to the Magnoliales and the Nymphaeales.
The first and most primitive includes all aquatic plants, the Alismales, Hydrocharitales [derived from the Alismales] and the Najadales.
Both the Alismales and the Najadales are derived from the Nymphaeales and those in turn from a primitive Angiosperm or common ancestor of the Magnoliales.
