The land of Najd, which for two centuries has been the crucible of the Wahhabi doctrine, is the subject of a body of interesting hadiths and early narrations, which repay close analysis.
Najd, by contrast, is mostly plateau, culminating in peaks such as Jabal Tayyi’ (1300 metres), in the Jabal Shammar range.
It is significant that although Najd is the closest of lands to Makka and Madina, it is not praised by any one of these hadiths.

However, as the government forces battled the mob, soldiers with the Egyptian mahmal opened fire indiscriminately on the areas in which the pilgrims from the Najd were camping, killing 25 innocent men, women and children, in addition to 40 camels.
Despite the calamity that befell them, when the people of the Najd heard these words they returned to their senses and, within minutes, they all returned to their campsites.

Led by the Muslim scholar Muhammad ibn 'Abd al- Wahhab and the Al Sa'ud family, the movement consolidated Najd and expanded into Mecca in 1803.
The Al Sa'ud, however, quickly regained control, and, with Riyadh as the new capital from 1824, the dynasty has ruled Najd continuously, save for a brief period around the turn of the century when the Rashid dynasty extended its power over the province.
Ibn Sa'ud proclaimed the unified Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932, and his provincial capital of Riyadh became the national capital, although Jidda continued as the diplomatic capital.

A familiar story, it starts with the death of Abd al-'Aziz's grandfather, the Sultan of Najd, and the expansion of Turkish influence in Arabia while the succession was being contested.
