Nakajima B5N - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the B5N Kate, its Allied counterparts the TBD Devastator and Fairey Swordfishwere was obsolescent by 1939, B5Ns were flown nearly throughout the whole war.
The B5N was designed by a team led by Katsuji Nakamura in response to a 1935 specification by the Navy for a torpedo bomber to replace the Yokosuka B4Y.
The B5N served as the basis for a follow-on design, the Nakajima B6N, which eventually replaced it in front-line service.

Specifications issued to Nakajima that year called for a 3-seat, carrier-based, torpedo bomber with a top speed of 464 kph (288 mph), a normal operating range of 1,853 km (1,151 miles), and a weapons load equal to the B5N.
Nakajima had to sweep the vertical tail forward in order to meet the length constraint imposed by the size of carrier deck elevators.
Nakajima had to redesign the tail to increase stability, and the engine caused trouble too.

Designed as a replacement for the B5N KATE, the B6N Tenzan (Heavenly Mountain) was the Imperial Japanese Navy’s standard torpedo bomber for the final years of the Pacific conflict.
In spite of a considerable increase in weight, Matsumura was constrained by the IJN’s carrier stowage requirement to use a wing roughly the same span and area as the earlier aircraft.
The distinction is that by the time Nakajima was able to make a decent aircraft out of it, the Allies had gained such overwhelming superiority that it didn’t make a difference.

Powered by a Nakajima Hikan radial engine, the low-wing three-crew monoplane with inwards-retracting wide-track landing gear was exceptionally clean, and first flew in January 1937.
Given the reporting name 'Kate' by the Allies, the B5N certainly earned the respect of the Americans, and in all the major carrier battles of the Pacific War attracted the undivided attention of defending fighters.
With its puny defensive armament of a single machine-gun and laden with a large bomb or torpedo, however, the B5N began to suffer very heavily, and although the type was fully committed during the Solomons campaign the survivors were withdrawn from combat after the Philippine battles of 1944.

In the competitive trials for a suitable design, the Nakajima team led by Katsuji Nakamura presented the Japanese navy with a configuration that went beyond expectations.

Nakajima entrusted the task of designing the new fighter to a team under the supervision of Hideo Itokawa, and this team quickly evolved a cantilever low-wing monoplane of basically all-metal construction with fabric-covered control surfaces.
The core of the structure was the semi-monocoque fuselage, which changed from a circular section at the front to an oval section father to the rear in the area of the cockpit, which was raised above the line of the fuselage and provided the pilot with very good fields of vision.
The main difference from the Ki-43-II KAI was the powerplant, which was 1 × Nakajima Ha-115-II radial, rated 1,230 hp (917 kW) at 9,185 ft (2.800 m).
