  Nakajima B6N Tenzan / JILL - torpedo-bomber
At a time when the triumphs of the B5N were still almost three years in the future, the Japanese navy issued a specification for a replacement, recognizing that only limited overall design improvement of the B5N could be achieved in the B5N2.
Accordingly design went ahead in 1939 of the Nakajima B6N and, despite the navy's preference for the Mitsubishsi Kasei radial, a Nakajima Mamoru was selected for the prototype which flew early in 1941.
Superficially the B6N Tenzan (heavenly mountain) resembled the earlier aircraft, but the much increased power and torque of the big engine and four-blade propeller was found to impose considerable directional stability problems, demanding that the vertical tail surfaces be offset to one side.

Nakajima B5N - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" (tail marking "EI-306") of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shokaku.
The B5N was designed by a team led by Katsuji Nakamura in response to a 1935 specification by the Navy for a torpedo bomber to replace the Yokosuka B4Y.
The B5N served as the basis for a follow-on design, the Nakajima B6N, which eventually replaced it in front-line service.

 Nakajima B6N2 Tenzan
Specifications issued to Nakajima that year called for a 3-seat, carrier-based, torpedo bomber with a top speed of 464 kph (288 mph), a normal operating range of 1,853 km (1,151 miles), and a weapons load equal to the B5N.
The B6N also had to operate from the same aircraft carriers as the KATE so it had to have the same overall dimensions.
Nakajima had to sweep the vertical tail forward in order to meet the length constraint imposed by the size of carrier deck elevators.

Nakajima B5N / B6N shipboard torpedo-bombers (David Llewellyn James)
The B6N, although a conventional-looking aircraft, was in some respects superior to contemporary Allied torpedo planes.
Known as the Tenzan ('Heavenly Mountain'), it was a slender and clean-lined machine with no internal weapons bay.

The major external difference was the vertical tail surface which was angled forward on the B6N to keep the aircraft inside the 11 meter (36 ft 1 1/16 in) limit imposed by the size of the IJN deck elevators.
The trials, held aboard the carriers Ryuho and Zuikaku, revealed a weakness in the arrestor hook and the aircraft was involved in several landing accidents.
The distinction is that by the time Nakajima was able to make a decent aircraft out of it, the Allies had gained such overwhelming superiority that it didn’t make a difference.

Japanese Nakajima B5N1 and B5N2 (Kate) Carrier Based Torpedo Bomber
The Nakajima B5N1 carrier based Torpedo Bomber (Kate) was designed in 1935 by a Nakajima design team under the supervision of Katsuji Nakamura and went into production as the Navy Type 97 Model 1 attack bomber in 1937.
The B5N2, produced from 1939 onward, was powered by the twin row, 14 cylinder 1000hp Nakajima Sakae 21 radial engine which was longer and smaller in diameter.
By 1944 the B5N2 had been replaced by the Nakajima B6N (Jill) Carrier based torpedo bomber but a few B5N2s stayed in service until the end of the war as trainers, target tow aircraft, and those that remained in flying condition were used as Kamikaze aircraft in 1945.

The B6N Tenzan (Heavenly Mountain) aircraft (Allied code name Jill) was delivered to the front line units early (B6N1) and late 1943 (B6N2).
The lack of armor or leak-proof fuel tanks made the 'Jill' as vulnerable to allied fighters as was the 'Kate'.
The B6N is still as vulnerable as the B5N - its main advantage is that it is 100 km/h faster than the B5N.

Kamikaze - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Imperial Japanese Navy's 1st Air Fleet, based at Manila was assigned the task of assisting the Japanese ships which would attempt to destroy Allied forces in Leyte Gulf.
However, the 1st Air Fleet at that time only had 40 aircraft: 34 Mitsubishi Zero carrier-based fighters, three Nakajima B6N torpedo bombers, one Mitsubishi G4M and two Yokosuka P1Y land-based bombers, and one reconnaissance plane.
A specially-designed propellor plane, the Nakajima Ki-115 Tsurugi, was a simple, easy-to-build plane, intended to use up existing stocks of engines, in a wooden airframe.
