Japanese Naval Aircraft Part Two - Bombers
Powered by four turbocharged 2,200 horsepower Homare engines, the G8N was armed with twin 20mm cannon in nose, upper, lower and tail turrets and could carry 8,800 pounds of bombs or two torpedoes.
The idea was that the G8N would release this from outside the range of the enemy air defenses, allowing it to glide down to a launch position where it would drop its torpedo.
Flushed with the success of the G8N, Nakajima were already investigating the possibility of a successor when the data from the procurement of the Heinkel He-274 and He-277 was secured.

During the flight test program, which continued for another ten months, the aircraft empennage was expanded, navigator's and gunner's cockpits modified, location of machine guns changed and the size of fuel tanks increased.
Meanwhile Nakajima was developing a new top-priority bomber project in accordance with Army requirements of 1938.
The power of its two twin-row radial "Nakajima" Ha-41 engines rated at 1250 hp each was clearly insufficient - even with minimal bomb load handling characteristics were poor and the speed was not high enough to escape from enemy fighters.
