Nakajima J1N - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nakajima J1N1 was a twin-engine aircraft used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during World War II and was used for reconnaissance, night fighter, and kamikaze missions.
Nakajima J1N at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center
Originally, the J1N was designed as a fighter, but early prototypes were judged too heavy and production was authorized for a three person crew reconnaissance variant, the J1N1-C and was also known by the Navy designation Type 2 Reconnaissance.

Science Fair Projects - Nakajima J1N
The Nakajima J1N Gekko (月光, "Moonlight") was a twin-engine night fighter used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during World War II.
The design was a development of the Type 2 Land-based reconnaisance plane, to which was fixed two sets of machine guns firing upward and downward at a forward angle, placed in the fuselage behind the cabin, similar to the German Schräge Musik configuration.
The J1N was used against B-29s in Japan, though the lack of good radar and insufficient high-altitude performance handicapped it, and a number were relegated to kamikaze attacks.

 Nakajima J1N1
The aircraft's speed must be at least 518 kph (322 mph) and it had to have a normal range of 2,410 km (1,496 miles) and a maximum range of 3,706 km (2,302 miles).
Nakajima nonetheless forged ahead and flew a J1N1 prototype May 2.
Nakajima concentrated on producing the Gekko version of the J1N for the remainder of the war.

Included in the requirement was good combat agility, an armament to include fixed forward firing 20mm cannon and 7.7mm machine guns as well as a rear 7.7mm machine gun for defense, a maximum speed of 323 mph and a range to vary from 1,496 to 2,302 miles.
Nakajima assembled a design team that came up with a clean low-wing monoplane of basically all-metal construction.
The J1N1 was ineffective against the B-29s and towards the end of the war were used as kamikazes.

Cybermodeler Online - Tamiya 1/48 Nakajima J1N Gekko Type 11 (Irving) Night Fighter
The story of the Gekko’s development began when the Japanese Navy requested development of a long-range fighter, that was fast and maneuverable enough to oppose single-engine fighters.
Nakajima proposed the Type 13-Shi Twin-engine Land-based Fighter (J1N1), which employed two 1000 hp “Sakae” engines (the same as used in the Zero fighter) on it’s sturdy wings.
Production was approved after the prototype was completed in March of 1941, but by July of 1942 it’s designation changed to Type 2 Land-based Reconnaissance Aircraft.

And the Nakajima J1N Gekko is way below the performance of the three listed above, although it managed to shoot down B-29, and I don´t know how it could do that, when the maximum speed of the B-29 is about 50 kph faster than the J1N´s.
Interestingly the RAF dispensed with the extra.303s for the Mosquito MkXIX, apparently because 4 20mm cannon with 20 seconds of fire were regarded as more than sufficient to down an enemy aircraft.
This argument is flawed as the Mosquito operated from 1941 untill the end of the war, but the P-61 and especially the He 219 were both late entries.
