In Naked Came the Manatee, 13 grown-ups, writers whose lives and work are identified with Miami and South Florida, prove that with care, humor, and technique, the unrolling and reweaving of an entertaining serial mystery can succeed.

Naked Came the Stranger was written by several authors in 1969, to show how bad writing could be and still be accepted by, I believe, a romance publisher.
The goal of Naked Came the Stranger was to have one poorly-written sex scene per chapter.
Naked Came the Stranger went on to inspire other intentionally poorly written books, most notably Naked Came the Manatee; included among its contributors was Dave Barry.

Originally published as a serial novel in the Miami Herald's Tropic magazine, Naked Came the Manatee resembles a literary game of telephone, with each writer contributing a chapter and passing it on to the next, who then makes the most of what he or she is given.
The result is a novel with wildly fluctuating styles and more crazy plot curves than a daytime drama, but thanks to these 13 masters of the craft this roller coaster of a book is almost as much fun to read as it obviously was to write.
Naked Came the Manatee is a deliciously twisted paean to South Florida, to its color, corruption, cacophony and Cubano culture.

But that aside, the long and final scene of "Claude and Greta" making love on a bed shrouded in sheer wind-blown fabric, their naked bodies charged with passion, and, likely, the most erotic and daring lesbian sex scene one could ever expect for a movie that was made in 1969.

But McGrady's real fame came from a book that was fiction with a vengeance.
Yet Naked was confabulated in a spirit much different from today's hoax- artists: Those '60s pranksters were not looking to advance their own careers by duping their editors with too-good-to-be-true copy; they were simply trying to spoof the world of crap novels by out-crapping them—and they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.
Reading Naked today, we can all sensuously drift back to a time when concupiscence was still big news, boozing reporters ran the newsroom, and a nonexistent yet demure Long Island housewife stepped out of her housedress and flashed a more innocent America.
