But the fact that this person still keeps talking about it 8 years after seeing it says a lot about the Naked Lunch, at a time when we tend to forget blockbusters a few hours after watching them.

The science of Naked Lunch is the popularized scientific knowledge of the mass media (obsessed as Burroughs is with the causes and cures of cancers and viruses) and the pseudo science of Hubbard's Scientology, Wilhelm Reich's orgonomy, and Burroughs's analysis of addiction and the apomorphine cure.
Naked Lunch is even more literal as unmediated experience than the confession of a junkie and the epistolary "In Search of Yage": it is a diary that records experience as it happens, and the act of recording is part of the experience.

Less a literal translation of the novel (an almost impossible feat) more of a mood and feeling evoked by much of Burrough's work, Naked Lunch manages to be both perverse and witty in it's exploration of the dark arts at the heart of the twin worlds of writing and hard drugs.
Highly recommended for fans of William Burroughs, Naked Lunch also happens to be director David Cronenberg's finest, achieving a rare psychological depth and insight that many of his more horror based films fail to.
'Naked Lunch' is unlike any movie you've seen before or anyone you're likely to see hence and for that reason alone, it's worth the admission price.

Hank and Martin pay a visit, revealing to Bill his true junkie life style, and urge him to finish the book called Naked Lunch that he has, unbeknownst to himself, been sending to them.
In Naked Lunch, Cronenberg has wisely rejected any clichéd attempt to show the creative process directly (no screwed-up paper in the wastebasket à la Zimmerman´s Julia), and through the narcotic state fused all of human, animal and mechanical life.
Naked Lunch is unquestionably a brave and ingenious solution to an impossible task of adaptation, and its surface fascinations and weird humour mainly compensate for the lack of narrative drive.
