Naked eye - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The naked eye is a figure of speech referring to human visual perception that is unaided by enhancing equipment, such as a telescope or binoculars.
the human eye would see about 2,500 stars in the clear sky but, in practice, the atmospheric extinction and dust reduce the number to 1500 to 2000 (in the center of a city as few as 200 to 500).
Meteor showers are better observed by naked eye than with binoculars—the Perseids (10–12 August) or the December Geminids.

A large number of open and globular star clusters and a few galaxies are within reach of a nice pair of binoculars.
The term "naked-eye" means simply using only your eyes to view a celestial event; and there are a good number to choose from.
Aurora can fill the sky of the extreme northern and/or southern latitudes, and there are even a few celestial objects that are also with 'eyes' reach.

 Naked Eye Observing
One useful naked eye project, regardless of the sort of observing you usually do, is to just monitor the conditions of the sky at your location.
As a naked eye observer, you might explore how the light pollution at your location varies with time of night, season of the year (does it corrolate with the amount of snow cover?), or the weather.
Most of the naked eye variables are not especially interesting from a scientific point of view, but they are potentially interesting to follow anyway.

He says: "The number of stars seen by the naked eye at once is seldom much above a thousand; though from their scintillation and the indistinct manner in which they are viewed, they appear to be almost infinite.
So there are, 5, 6, 7, 9, 14 Pleiades (all naked eye counts given by various observers).

Naked-eye planet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saturn's luminosity is often enhanced by its rings, which reflect light back toward the Earth to varying degrees depending on their inclination to the ecliptic; however, the rings themselves are not visible to the naked eye from the Earth.
Uranus is visible to the naked eye in principle on very clear nights, but unlike the true naked-eye planets it is always less luminous than several thousands of stars, and as such, does not stand out enough for its existence to be noticed without the aid of a telescope.
In some cultures, the five naked-eye planets are grouped with the Sun and the Moon, called luminaries (meaning "shining object") to form a group of seven heavenly objects (or seven lights of the Earth, starry planets, traditional planets, etc.).

A naked-eye comet - one visible to the unaided eye without telescope or binoculars - is an enjoyable sight, particularly for the brighter comets.
Historically, bright comets were interpreted as portents of doom, as in 1066 when the appearance of a comet, later known as Comet Halley, was blamed for the defeat of the Saxons at the Battle of Hastings.
To an experienced observer, Comet LINEAR may become visible to the naked eye in mid-March, when it is expected to brighten to 6th magnitude.

NASA - Eye Safety During Solar Eclipses
The Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total solar eclipse.
Even when 99% of the Sun's surface is obscured during the partial phases of a total eclipse, the remaining photospheric crescent is intensely bright and cannot be viewed safely without eye protection [Chou, 1981; Marsh, 1982].
Generally, the same equipment, techniques and precautions used to observe the Sun outside of eclipse are required for annular eclipses and the partial phases of total eclipses [Reynolds and Sweetsir, 1995; Pasachoff and Covington, 1993; Pasachoff and Menzel, 1992; Sherrod, 1981].

Using geometry and their eyes, the Greeks had reason to believe that cosmic distances were much greater than earthly ones, cosmic space ampler by far than our own lands.
