  Pavel Nakhimov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in the Gorodok village of Vyazma district of Smolensk region, the son of a retired Russian Army major, Nakhimov entered the Naval Academy for the Nobility (Morskoy Shlyakhetskiy Korpus) in St Petersburg in 1815.
As the commander of the port and the military governor of the city, Nakhimov became in fact the head of the Sevastopol naval and land defense forces.
Nakhimov was buried inside St Vladimir Cathedral in Sevastopol along with Mikhail Lazarev, V.A. Kornilov and Vladimir Istomin.

She was refloated and salvaged by the Soviets in 1949 and renamed Admiral Nakhimov.
The Pyotr Vasev was a Japanese-built, 18,604-ton freighter recently acquired by the Soviet Union, and was carrying a cargo of oats and barley.
The Admiral Nakhimov continued forward with the freighter's bow in its side, ripping a 900 square foot (84 m²) hole in the hull between the engine and boiler rooms.

Nakhimov had become popular thanks to his satire "Elegy", which had been written in 1809 on case of the famous edict about the examinations for officials and represented the trouble of ignorant pretendents.
The second object of Nakhimov's hatred were Frenches in general, French tutors in particular, and those Russians who were taught by them; the first ones were represented in the article "Verbal apes", the second ones were ridiculed in comic poem "Pursoniada", the third ones - in work "Merzilkin".
Nakhimov's verse is often lack finishing, but the thought in it is expressed always as distinct and sharp one.

Pavel Nakhimov was born on July 5 /June 23 by the old calendar/ 1802 in the village of Gorodok, Smolensk gubernia /200 kilometres west of Moscow/ into an officer's family.
In 1845, Nakhimov was promoted to the rank of rear-admiral and appointed commander of a brigade of vessels, and in 1852 to that of vice-admiral.
During the 1854-1855 defence of Sevastopol (Crimea, a peninsula on the Black Sea) attacked by overwhelming forces of France, Britain and Turkey, Nakhimov correctly assessed Sevastopol's strategic significance and used all forces and means at his disposal to strengthen city defences.

 Naval Technology - Kirov Class (Type 1144.2) - Heavy Missile Cruiser
The Kirov Class provides the capability to engage large surface ships and to defend the fleet against air and submarine attack.
Four cruisers were built but only Admiral Nakhimov (commissioned in 1988) and Pyotr Velikhiy (commissioned in 1995) remain active.
