A city status was granted to Nalchik in 1921, when it became an administrative center of Kabardian autonomous oblast.

NALCHIK (RIA Novosti) -- During a three-day joint special operation conducted by the Interior Ministry and the FSB on the territory of Kabardino-Balkaria (a federal republic in the North Caucasus), operatives eliminated and detained several bandits who planned terrorist acts on the territory of the Russian Federation.
During a press conference in Nalchik, the capital of the republic, Russian deputy interior minister Arkady Yedelev announced that five terrorists were detained and three were eliminated.
As to three terrorists eliminated in Nalchik, they were all on a wanted list in connection with terrorist acts in the Rostov region and the Stavropol region.

Svetlana Danilova, a Jewish community leader, reported that several Jews in Nalchik have read this incident as a signal for them to leave the northern Caucasus city.
In a report to UCSJ's Chicago Action, Danilova said that local authorities have been very supportive of the Jewish community and are "very much involved in the investigation." She added that only one-third of the Jewish Day School's 500-student body is Jewish, though all students study Jewish history.

According to police reports, among the dead was Muslim Ataev, the leader of the Yarmuk religious extremist group, which has claimed responsibility for several high-profile murders of law enforcement officials in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, where Nalchik is the capital.
Air travel to and from Nalchik was halted throughout Thursday.
