With these words, Nam Phuong undertakes to reconstruct and retell her life story – and the succession of events that led to her first failed attempt to escape from the newly created Socialist Republic of Vietnam as a ‘boat-person’ in 1977, an attempt that resulted in imprisonment and interrogation by the Vietnamese authorities.
One of Nam Phuong’s earliest memories was of the sudden night-time arrest of her father by the French security police in 1945 and her resulting fear and panic.
For Nam Phuong, ‘the historic exodus of almost a million north Vietnamese to the south proved what communism was like,’[32] and she presents the years following partition as ‘chaotic,’ including the widespread violence between the various national religious sects and government forces.

Packed for lunch and dinner with foreign visitors, tourists, ex-pats and local Vietnamese, Nam Phuong, a Vietnamese restaurant situated in a large French villa on the northeast corner of Phan Chu Trinh and Ly Thuong Kiet, delivers both Northern and Southern cuisine, as well as traditional Vietnamese musicians nightly, with a sense of calm.
The menu is not that disparate from other upscale Vietnamese restaurants around Ha Noi, but the quality of the dishes departs, especially the Nam Phuong deep-fried spring rolls (VND60,000), six of which are served on toothpicks sticking out of a pineapple with aromatic fish sauce for dipping.
