Hundreds of local residents, from both sides of the Namanga border town in Longido District, have decided to ‘utilize’ this buffer zone by erecting residential and commercial premises, a number of them being permanent structures.
The ‘no-man’s land’ at Namanga, meanders at between 50 and 100 meters wide along the border which is doted with pre-colonial concrete beacons each bearing its own grid reference, for instance one of them reads, T.K 423.
Some immigration officers at Namanga were also of view that both the Immigration and Tanzania Revenue Authority offices should have been erected about 500 meters from the borderline, so that the river that passes nearby (about half a kilometer from the borderline) could serve as cross-over points, leaving enough space to monitor newcomers.

During the 1967 Mountain Club meet on the mountain, large herds of elephant were encountered on the way up, and buffalo and rhino were met near the summit.
The initial consignment from Kenya involved 279 camels, which were distributed to 20 groups in four districts of Arusha and Manyara Regions.
The Kenyan camels seem to have responded fairly well to their new Tanzanian homes and climate, although, Dr Lyimo says, "There have been a few deaths due to fractures when camels fall into trenches, poisoning when they eat poisonous plants and pneumonia in calves." Reproduction in general has been slow.

The main road into the Park is from Nairobi are via Namanga (240 km) on the Nairobi - Arusha Road, via Meshanani Gate.
The road is tarmac upto Namanga but is badly corrugated and potholed in places from Namanga to Meshanani Gate (75km).
Many of the park viewing roads are not usable during the rains and because of the loose ashy nature of volcanic soil, the roads become very dusty during the dry season.

Bax Kasamali and Muhamood Khan, a mechanic, are reported to have died from a poisonous gas, carbon monoxide, while transporting Kurji’s car, a Subaru Impreza group N10 for the rally.
The poisonous gas is reportedly to have been emitted from a generator they were using in their bus while waiting Friday night for the Namanga border to open, Kenyan Police confirmed.
A doctor at Mulago said that the generator must have been faulty and produced carbon monoxide — a gas produced due to incomplete combustion of fuels.
