Namche is located at 3,440 metres (11,286 ft.) (the low point that is), populating the sides of a hill.
Namche is the administrative center for the Khumbu region so there are many Nepalese officials, a police check post and a bank.
Immediately west of Namche is Kongde Ri at 6,187 metres (20,298 ft.) and to the east is Thamserku at 6,608 metres (21,680 ft.).

There are two routes out of Namche Bazaar to Phortse Tenga, the small village from which you begin the steep climb up to Gokyo.
You can climb the steep hill directly behind Namche Bazaar to Shyangboche airstrip and continue from there, through fields and forests of dwarfed pines, to Khumjung, a large Sherpa village in a wide gray valley (at least, outside of the monsoon season it's gray).
Because the Elevation Gain from Namche Bazaar to Dole is a bit more than is recommended for a single day at this altitude, watch for symptoms of altitude sickness.

Namche Bazaar, set in a horseshoe-shaped natural ampitheater, is the nerve center of the Upper Khumbu Valley, Nepal.
Namche Bazaar is referred to as the Sherpa capital of the world, and no doubt it’s the nerve center of the Upper Khumbu Valley.
The scenery around Namche is already spectacular, but after climbing a few hours straight up the mountain to a no-named peak at about 3,800 meter/12,500 feet, I had a vantage point that allowed me to look out over the entire Khumbu Valley in both directions.

I got a phone call from the BAI office from Leila this morning very early, I should say I called in to her and she told me that she had spoken to Will via satellite phone and that he was on his way down to meet us at Namche Bazaar.
I had to sit on this secret all day, I didn’t want to get Amy and the others excited in case Will decided to stop along the way, but I knew that he would be walking in here this afternoon and in fact he did.
So here we are in Namche, Will is resting, recuperating for his summit attempt and we are acclimatizing for our attempt up to base camp.

I am feeling well, but Mike and I agree that a layover day in Namche is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Namche is terraced, so in order to move about different sections of town, you have to make your way over stone fences, rock-strewn paths, and through blind alleys.

I have to say that this trekking group didn't make Namche Hill seem like it was a very big deal.
We walked up in a couple of hours and enjoying the height, we came into Namche and went directly to the Panorama Lodge, where I have been staying for expeditions and passing through with trekking groups since 1987.
It is a really comfortable home base, we will be spending a lot of time in Namche and you will hear a lot of about this great town as the trip goes on.

On the way to Namche you officially enter the boundaries of Sagarmatha National Park.
Every Saturday the village hosts a large market where there are sides of buffalo meat, sacks of grain, and bamboo baskets filled with vegetables and tangerines lining the terraces at the edge of town.

It's a short day from Thame to Namche, which can be easily located by following the thronging masses of over-equipped American trekkers, armed lethal flailing ski-poles and excitedly shouting inane rubbish to nobody in particular with loud irritating accents.
Namche Bazaar appears quite unexpectedly below us, spread dramatically throughout a deep scoop in the valley side, bounded on the riverward side by an immense line of prayer flags undulating in slow dramatic and slighly nauseating waves above the town.
The lower part of the town is a large market area, dominated in the centre by a vast while stupa.
