Name That Tune was a game show that put two contestants against each other to test their knowledge of songs.
Contestants wrote down the names of tunes sung by the show's vocalist, a then-unknown Kathie Lee Gifford (known by her married name at the time, Johnson).
Naming all seven tunes in 30 seconds won the entire prize package, plus the chance to return to the show in a later episode (or episodes) in an attempt to win the $100,000 grand prize.

The $100,000 Name That Tune's wheel was no exception, as the arrow was often replaced, because it would somehow slide in areas where there were no pegs on the wheel, and it often took a while to stop after Jim Lang would spin it on occasion.
Name That Tune was pretty hilarious, in that the orchestra would play a song they really liked, and minutes later, they'd play it again and again throughout Melody Roulette as a rift.

Name That Tune was a simple show to mount in the ‘50s because it had nothing but standards, but in the ‘70s and ‘80s the mix of rock and standards was often uneasy.

I spent the better part of that late night summoning up phrases from other songs I used to like—songs whose names and artists are now totally obscure—the b-sides of old singles, one-hit wonders, even some crazy stuff my husband’s parents had stashed in the garage.
