Concerns that the filesystem wasn't being maintained were laid to rest when Andrew Morton [interview] stated, "the namesys engineers continue to maintain reiser4 and I continue to receive patches for it.
With Namesys founder Hans Reiser [interview] recently arrested as the prime suspect in the disappearance of his estranged wife, a brief thread on the lkml discussed the future of ReiserFS.
Alexander Lyamin, listed on the Namesys website as their "hostmaster and sysadmin", noted that the team was "rather shaken and stressed at the moment".

As for today, thanks to all the work done by the Namesys people, Reiser4 is growing near to inclusion in the main tree and hopefully it won't get take too many time until reiser 4 is merged.
Namesys has been working on this question for two-plus years, so you can imagine what the state of readiness was when it was initially submitted, but all this work is also a good sign, in every way this points to the future success of Reiser4.
Namesys developers have been fixing some of those problems for years, so it's not that it has been a error not having inclued Reiser 4 some years ago.

 Linux: Reiser4's Future | KernelTrap
Things like a willingness to maintain the code after it gets merged, or at least turning the code into something the community is willing to maintain if the original developers stop maintaining it.
Taking in a new code base on such a track record is not a good idea when the code is not in a shape where the community wants to maintain it.
That's not where the problem lies - the namesys guys are responsive and play well with others.

Kernel developers vs. Hans Reiser, part 34142..
It’s just not likable code yet, although Namesys is apparently getting it there (and probably sacrificing the more promising features of Reiser 4 to do so).
And this stance has far less to do with whether Reiser 4 is secure, stable, and functional and more to do with the fact that Namesys is using coding conventions that bother the kernel developers.
Namesys has nurtured the code and is fighting to get it in, but the only thing keeping it out now is probably just an apology from Hans.

ReiserFS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ReiserFS is a general-purpose, journaled computer file system designed and implemented by a team at Namesys led by Hans Reiser who is referred to as the project's Benevolent Dictator for Life.
Namesys considers ReiserFS (now occasionally referred to as Reiser3) stable and feature-complete and with the exception of security updates and critical bug fixes, has thus ceased development on it to concentrate on its successor, Reiser4.
Early implementations of ReiserFS (prior to that in Linux 2.6.2) were also susceptible to out-of-order write hazards (files being appended to during a crash, for example, would gain a tail of garbage upon next mount).
