His grandfather was driven out of Tibet by the rival Gelugpa sect under the control of the Dalai Lama, and chose to settle in the Paro valley in western Bhutan, the valley having a close association with his persecuted branch of Tibetan Buddhism, the Kagyupa.
He was proud to have the Jesuits as guests of his court and was reluctant to grant them permission to leave and offered to support their proselytizing efforts with manpower and church-building funds, (but they pressed on to Tibet in search of the apostate church said to be isolated in the heart of central Asia).
In 1634, in the Battle of Five Lamas Ngawang Namgyal prevailed over the Tibetan and Bhutanese forces allied against him and was the first to unite Bhutan into a single country.

The Dalai Lama recognized Phuntsok Namgyal as the ruler of the southern slopes of the Himalayas (Sikkim) and is also credited to have sent ceremonial present such as the silken scarf bearing Dalai Lama's seal, the mitre(hat) of the Guru Rimpoche, the devil dagger (Phurpa) and the most precious sand image of the Guru.
She conspired with a Tibetan man of medicine and caused Chador Namgyal's death by way of blood letting from a main artery while the king was holidaying at Ralang hot water spring in 1716.
Tenzing Namgyal died in Lhasa and his son Tsudphud Namgyal was sent to Sikkim in 1793 to succeed him as the monarch.

Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal [1594-1651], was the reincarnation of the 4th Drukchen ('brug chen), the Omniscient Pema Karpo (kun mkhyen padma dkar po).
