Namhansanseong Fortress is a very popular mountain-climbing and driving destination located just outside Seoul.
In the spring, the acacia trees grow thick, in the summer the green forest covers the entire mountain, and in the fall, many people visit to climb the mountain covered in red autumn leaves.
Namhansanseong Fortress, located on Mt. Namhansan mountain, was originally built as a earthen fortress during Gogureyo period, about 2,000 years ago, but after many renovations, Gwanghaegun of the Joseon Period built the fortress properly in 1621.

The Manchus were not able to take the fortress by storm, but after 45 days of siege the food supply inside ran out, and the king was forced to surrender, giving his sons as hostages and shifting allegiance from the Ming.
The Samjeondo Monument (三田渡碑) was erected on the southern route from Seoul to Namhansanseong to mark this event.

The place is quite isolated, even though it’s fairly close to Seoul, and it boasts some interesting temples.

Namsan Park (1x space) (directly under Namsan tower) Namhansanseong park (2x spaces) (Pink line - lower east corner of Seoul) Namsan park is good because it is in the center of the city, can be easily found and has a lot of paved space to use.
The Namhansanseong venues are in the middle of trees and nature.
Personally I prefer the latter (Namhansanseong lower) but all would be a fun space to use.

The "Namhansanseong," Historic Site No. 57, is an old fortress, newly restored, dating to the Chosun dynasty.
Apparently it is built on the ruins of a Baejke fortress; the land affords a natural protection, since it is on a mountaintop.
Today there is a memorial to Kim Sang-yong within the Namhansanseong fortress walls.

Namhansanseong is one of my favorite places to hike in Korea.
The Korean King retreated to Namhansanseong when the Manchus invaded Korea in 1635, however he was forced to surrender after a few weeks under siege.
To get to Namhansanseong, take subway line 8 to Namhansanseong station and walk one hour east or take a city bus to the village.

Ten minutes later I looked outside and the ground was white - it was snowing.
The snow lasted well into the afternoon and we ended up going to Namhansanseong ("South Korean Mountain Fortress") as planned, which turned out to be beautiful.
By the afternoon, after a lunch of duck soup, the weather had cleared up and the skies were clear and sunny.

Today I spent all day at Namhansanseong riding the excellent trails there.
Unfortunately I've only had the pleasure of riding in the Cheonan area where I was going to dental school, so I have a very limited knowledge of the riding in Korea outside of a 20 km radius of my house.

The meal was pure dog meat, with little spice.
