The name Spanish dollar was used for a Spanish silver coin, the peso, an eight-real coin, which was widely circulated during the 18th century in the Spanish colonies in the New World.
The use of the Spanish dollar and the Maria Theresa thaler as legal tender for the early United States is the reason for the name of that nation's currency.
The dollar was also in use in Scotland during the 17th century, and there is a claim that it was invented at the University of St Andrews.

WALVIS BAY, 31 Jan 2005 (IRIN) - Battered by two years of a strong Namibian dollar, the country's fishing sector - a key foreign exchange earner - is now in trouble, with retrenchments and factory closures on the horizon.
The largest of the two, Blue Ocean, a subsidiary of the South African-based Oceana Group, closed its fish processing factory at the Namibian port of Walvis Bay in December 2004, and is set to retrench 133 labourers on 31 January.
A 'Namibianisation' programme was also introduced to increase the ratio of Namibian citizens employed by the sector, and joint ventures between established fishing companies and mainly small, fl empowerment newcomers were encouraged.

Nam Dollar In SA COULD someone please tell me why the Namibian dollar is not accepted (used) in South Africa while the South African rand is accepted as legal tender in the land of the brave?
When travelling to South Africa, you need to change your Namibian dollars to rands, but when South Africans come to Namibia they are free to come with their currency.
In a town like van Rhynsdorp where the Namibian dollar is accepted, it is funny and sad that they deduct 7% from any purchase made with Namibian dollars.

Posted: 12/10/2003 6:43 AM (RapaportÂ… December 10, 2003) Namdeb, the Namibian diamond mining joint-venture with De Beers, has embarked on numerous initiatives, including reducing labor costs, to try to curb the adverse effect the strong Namibian dollar against the U.S. dollar is having on its revenues, the company stated on November 28, 2003.
The reason given was that Namdeb, “like all other export driven resources industries, is reliant on good international sales based on a strong U.S. dollar.”
The company has briefed all its stakeholders of its intention to offer employees in certain categories, the opportunity to accept “generous voluntary separation packages.” Inge Zaamwani, Namdeb managing director commented that Namdeb is well aware of the impact this message will have on its employees and stakeholders.

 Why Nam Dollar Doesn't Count
Could somebody please tell me why the Namibian dollar is not accepted (used) in South Africa while the South African rand is tolerated in the "Land of the Brave".
I am completely sure that all Namibians feel disadvantaged by this arrangement.
