Namoi River - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Namoi River is a river in inland New South Wales, Australia.
The headwaters of the Namoi, including the Macdonald River, the Peel River, the Cockburn River and the Manilla River, rise on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in northern New South Wales.
The floodplains of the lower Namoi around Wee Waa are an important area for growing cotton which is irrigated using water from the dam.

COMPERE: Aboriginal communities in northern New South Wales claim that a massive fish kill on the Namoi River was caused by pesticides from the cotton industry.
You've got a different colour in the fish and their gills are gone pink, and a lot of the fish that come to the surface they only last for a hour or two when they're floating down and they die.
GEOFF WISE: All the indications at this stage is that it's most likely from lack of oxygen in the river coinciding with the rising flood waters that were coming down, we believe it's probably lack of oxygen in the water that's led to their death.

River Flow Objectives were not recommended for the regulated parts of the Murray, Murrumbidgee, Lachlan, Macquarie, Namoi, Gwydir and Hunter Rivers, as well as for the Barwon-Darling River.
River systems can sometimes be affected by unforeseen or irregular events-such as algal blooms or the start of bird-breeding seasons.
As river flows are a major determinant of many of these processes, we can sometimes alleviate a water-quality or environmental problem by better managing river flows.

Early indications from the Lake Alexandrina site at the mouth of the River Murray were that over the past 40 years there had been a significant increase in the level of recycled nitrogen, suggesting an increase from irrigation drainage.
Most of the research on algal blooms in rivers has been conducted in the Northern Hemisphere where the landscape and river systems are totally different to those in Australia.

 Namoi River
The river provides a source of financial security for the community, which comes from industry and other economic benefits that depend on the overall water system-including secure groundwater supplies to bores.
There was also support for the less-stringent option of water quality adequate for basic river health and basic human uses, either as a preferred choice or as an alternative to the previous option-particularly as a short-term goal for waterways affected by more intense human use.
Reduce the loss of native vegetation across the catchment and the resulting land degradation, leading to excessive sedimentation of streams and wetlands, increasing water turbidity, rising watertables, increased salinity levels in waters, and silting-which is diminishing the number and size of water holes.

An assessment of the current biophysical condition of the Namoi River (environmental scan) is essential to develop a common understanding of the processes and management activities that affect the health of the river.
Native fish populations are often used as an indicator of river health, as their presence is dependent on a number of factors such as energy (food) availability, water quality, flow regime and habitat availability.
With the establishment of this program in the Namoi Valley, particularly if the IMEF is further integrated with the Central and North West Regions Water Quality Program, a greater understanding of the linkages between catchment management practices and processes affecting water quality and biotic response to river flows may be achieved.
