An epidemic of meningitis in Nampula province continued to spread and to claim lives during August, although by the end of September the epidemic was reportedly under control.
Reports in June from Zambezia, Sofala and Tete province indicate that although the harvest in April and May has improved food security and overall numbers of admissions to nutritional centres are at their lowest since the beginning of the year, the harvest is unlikely to be sufficient for the entire year.
Nampula Province is particularly worrying as the nutrition situation appears to have been deteriorating.

NAMPULA, Mozambique, MAY 18, 2004 (Zenit.org).- A woman religious in Mozambique who reported illicit trafficking in human organs left the country saying she was pressured to do so by the local authorities.
Sister Maria Elilda dos Santos told the news agency Lusa that she received a letter from the governor of the northern province of Nampula, where she had worked for nine years, asking her to leave Mozambique.
Their convent was located between the farm where the victims were taken and the airfield where allegedly the boxes of human organs are transported at night to be flown out of the country.

Preliminary results show that Frelimo scored significant victories in cities of the centre and north, such as Chimoio, Quelimane and Nampula, and won the capital city, Maputo, while Renamo won the race for mayor and the municipal assembly in the second city of Beira.
Frelimo supporters went to the polls in reasonable numbers in the south of the country, even though there was not the slightest chance that their candidates would be defeated.
Renamo supporters in the provinces of Sofala and Nampula had shown a similar determination and, as a result, the opposition defeated the ruling party in four municipalities.

JOHANNESBURG, 7 Sep 2004 (IRIN) - Parts of Mozambique's northern province of Nampula are facing food shortages due to devastation of the staple crop, cassava, by brown streak disease.
A joint WFP and Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) crop and food supply assessment mission earlier this year found that "the main problem regarding pests and diseases is brown streak disease of cassava, which is seriously affecting yields in Memba [a district of Nampula] and to a lesser extent in parts of the neighbouring districts".
Manente said it was now evident that "three or four districts" in the northern coastal area of Nampula had been adversely affected by the spread of brown streak disease.

MAPUTO, April 29 (AFP) - Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano on Thursday condemned a recent wave of killings and mutilations allegedly linked to the trafficking in human organs in a province of the southeastern African country.
Making his final state of the nation address before he steps down at the end of this year, Chissano said the recent killings in the northern province of Nampula must be thoroughly investigated "in order not to create a generalized feeling of insecurity and panic."
The Mozambique Human Rights League (LDH) recently blamed the mutilations on foreign witchdoctors, mostly from west Africa, who have settled in the country lately.
