River Namsen is regarded as the second most productive salmon river in Norway, with annual catches of 25 to 30 tonnes.
These figures include the adjoining rivers of Björa, Söråa and Sandöla. The oldest registered source about salmon fishing in Namsen dates from 1597 - it describes the salmon leaping "18 feet high" at Fiskumfoss, but the salmon may well have played an important role in the economy of this area for even longer than this.
They quickly named the Namsen "Queen of Rivers" and the rumours of record high salmon catches and sizes spread among distinguished fly fishermen and brought an increasing number of English fishermen to Namsen during the summer months.
