The metro in Ukraine's second largest city was inaugurated in 1975 and consists of about 30 stations, many of them with interesting architecture and lighting and built with materials like marble and granite.
Older ones (the metro opened in 1978) are more uniform but on the extension of line B and on the new line D, attention was given to more interesting design and stations have been planned by different architects.
This metro was opened in 1968 and has some stations which are as futuristic as the city itself.

Designed by Victor Prus, the metro station is a normal side-platform station, built cut-and-cover in order to provide a large space for the heavily trafficked mezzanine.
As a key part of the underground city, the mezzanine has ticket barriers on either side, in order to allow pedestrians to pass from one end of the station to the other.

Bonaventure is the stop at the main train station of Montreal where you can change to "les trains de banlieu" and get out into the suburbs, although I am told they're quite unreliable (as many of my work friends would tell me when they'd get in late to work!).

This little greasy spoon is very famous in Montreal: its only a counter with a few seats but on weekends (and even some weekdays) it is so busy you have to wait in line: in summer there is seating outside on their makeshift terrace (sidewalk).
We always had the same great waitress and there was always the same lazy bartender/manager that talked on the phone all night while our waitress ran her ass off for us.

I drove by today and there was a huge crowd of people around it, with lots of firetrucks, ambulances and a ton of cops, and they had police taped the entire station and part of the street.
(I don't know from experience, but that metro seems to make the news/newspaper quite often...).
What you saw could easily be something that was gang related...I could be wrong.
