Nana Buruku, the primaeval Spirit of the Swamp   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Nana, who came to the Yorubas from the Fon people of neighboring Dahomey, is connected with lakes, swamps and moors.
Nana Buruku is not "one of us": she's more alien than whatever being the Spielbergs of this world can put on the white screen, and there are no morals or human values inside Nana.
In this sense Nana Buruku is the beginning and the end: she existed long before Olodumare and his Orishas came around, and she will still be here when not only ourselves, but also all the Spirits in our religion will have gone again.

 Buluku (African god)
Possibly descended from the Hyborian gods, he mated with Gaea in her role as Nana and fathered the Orishas, the ancient Earth gods of Africa.
They were eventually forced to realize that the Celestials could destroy their realms, and so they acceded to the Celestials edict that they sever relations with mortals and stop trafficking on Earth.
Restricted from interfering in the lives of mortals by the Celestials, Buluku and the African Gods joined forces to transform the mortal, Laurent, into the first Brother Voodoo to combat the evils unleashed by Sagbata.

 African Gods (Loa, Orishas)
History: The origins of the African Gods are largely unrevealed but they are most likely descended from Buluku and Gaea in her role as Nana, the African Mother-Earth.
(Thor I#300 (fb))- Centuries ago, Buluku, the leader of the African Gods attended a council of Godheads in which they agreed not to interfere with the activities of the Celestials.
In the MU, I would surmise that Buluku supersedes them both to keep dissension out of the Loa (Voodoo Gods) and their relations the Orishas (Sky Gods).

Sometimes Mawu is said to have been produced by Se or Segbo, an abstract term for creator, but he is also called Se himself (ibid., p.
Most often, however, it is thought that the present Mawu was brought forth by a higher divinity, Nana Buluku, who, having given birth, retired and took no further part in formation.

Vodun - WiccanWeb.ca   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Vodun is a magical form of animism that developed among various West African ethnic groups predating historical times.
The cultural area of the Fon, Gun, Mina and Ewe peoples share common metaphysical concepts of a dual cosmological divine principle: Nana Buluku, the Creator God and the God(s)-Actor(s) or Vodun(s), daughters and sons of the Creator's twin children Mawu (goddess of the moon) and Lisa (sun god).
The Creator God is the cosmogonical principle, who does not trifle with the mundane, and the Vodun(s) are the God(s)-Actor(s) who actually govern on terrenal issues.

The symbol of Ogou is a sword, like the symbol of Luu Dongbin.
