Ms Mahuta enjoys almost universal support from her constituents to cross the floor in opposition to the Government's foreshore and seabed legislation, but opinion is divided over suggestions she should leave the party after her vote.
Ms Mahuta's father, Sir Robert, was a Labour supporter and was instrumental in her entry to Parliament as a 26-year-old list MP in 1996.
Ms Mahuta is a niece of Dame Te Ata, the head of the Kingitanga movement.

The Waikato River claim was part of the Wai 30 claim lodged by the late Sir Robert Mahuta, father of Tainui MP Nanaia Mahuta and brother of Dame Te Ata.
Mr Brownlee also accused the Government of using negotiations to reward Nanaia Mahuta for changing her stance on the foreshore legislation.
Ms Mahuta, now a Cabinet minister, retained her Tainui seat after fending off a strong campaign by Maori Party candidate Angeline Greensill in last year's general election.

In a written submission to the select committee considering the Foreshore and Seabed Bill, Ms Mahuta said she was acting as the Tainui MP.
Ms Mahuta flirted with leaving Labour as the Government debated the policy, but in the end abstained from voting on the bill.

Nanaia Mahuta has been sworn in as the new Minister of Customs.
Prior to her appointment, Ms Mahuta was the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Ministers of Education and Local Government and was a member of the Select Committees for Health, Local Government and Environment and Maori Affairs.
Ms Mahuta was first elected to Parliament in 1996 as a list MP, and represented the Te Tai Hauauru electorate in 1999 and the Tainui electorate in 2002 and 2005.

 Share title to protect sea says MP
Tainui MP Nanaia Mahuta has suggested a "third way" to deal with the foreshore and seabed issue - a custodial title vested in Maori and the Crown.
She says the domain of Tangaroa (the god of the sea, or the sea) would be the principal benefactor of the title.
Ms Mahuta's proposals were printed in the latest issue of Tu Mai magazine.

New Zealand's controversial foreshore and seabed bill, which will confirm public ownership of foreshore and offshore areas while preserving certain traditional Maori access rights, has passed its first reading with the support of the opposition NZ First Party.
The bill, which would overturn a ruling of the Waitangi Tribunal, has caused unprecedented opposition among Maori; two Maori MPs from the governing Labour Party voted against the bill, but one of them, Nanaia Mahuta, backed off her earlier threat to quit the Government and cost the ruling coalition its majority.
The other dissident MP, Tariana Turia, has resigned from Labour and been fired from her ministerial posts and intends to quit Parliament on May 17.

Announcing the Stay Dog Safe This Summer campaign at Te Aro School, Wellington, Nanaia Mahuta said ensuring public safety around dogs was an important part of the Labour-led government's commitment to building safer families and communities.
The tips were taken from The Dog Box, a dog safety teaching resource distributed to all New Zealand schools in October 2005.

Te Ata was the longest-serving head of the 148-year-old Kingitanga (King) movement, which was formed largely in response to Maori land losses to European settlers who flocked to the British colony.
She became Maori queen in May 1966, the day her father, King Koroki Te Rata Mahuta Tawhiao, was buried.
