In summer 1999 the Nanaimo City Council voted to spend $500,000 to build the first 4.3 kilometres of trailway along the EandN corridor.
Nanaimo's section of the Trans Canada trail starts at the ferry terminal in Departure Bay and manages to wind it's way through town for 12 kilometres.
A walker should be able to negotiate most of Nanaimo's waterfront on foot, with extensive trails throughout the Nanaimo estuary and around Long Lake.
