Nancy Farmer's first statewide run for office was for treasurer in 2000, when she defeated Platte County prosecutor Todd Graves, now the U.S. attorney for western Missouri and also the brother of U.S. Rep. Sam Graves.
Nancy Farmer grew up in Jacksonville, Ill., and was the first in her family to graduate from college.
Her other elections were all successful races for the Missouri House in 1992, 1994 and 1996.

She holds frequent conversations with her dead mother, whom she visualizes by means of a torn-out magazine advertisement; and her treacherous escape by boat to Zimbabwe, where her father's family lives, is peppered with visits from water spirits, as well as the spirit of the dead man who owned her craft.
