African Palm Civet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The African Palm Civet (Nandinia binotata), also known as the Two-spotted Palm Civet, is a small mammal, with short legs, small ears, a body resembling a cat, and a long lithe tail as long as its body.
Although they physically resemble other civets (family Viverridae) it has been suggested that the African Palm Civets are genetically distinct, and diverge before cats from other civets.
However this suggestion is not universally accepted, although they are classified as the only species in genus Nandinia and in their own family, Nandiniidae.

 Kakamega National Reserve
Today only smaller antelope (primarily various duikers) and bush pig (Potamochoerus porcus) are present.
Small carnivores, such as Egyptian mongooses (Herpestes ichneumon), African civets (Viverra civetta), servals (Felis serval), genets (Genetta tigrina), and palm civets (Nandinia binotata) are common; some larger carnivores, including jackals (Canis adustus), spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta), and leopards (Panthera pardus) also occur there.
Although rodents, insectivores, and bats are clearly present, they have been little studied at Kakamega.

What makes Engosheraton a notable place, though, is its collection, which is filled with animals which may not be very rare in the wild, but which are infrequently seen in zoos.
Among its mammals are African palm civet (Nandinia binotata arborea), greater galago (the zoo's symbol), fl-and-white colobus, giant pouched rat, a pair of spotted hyenas, and, sharing a small paddock, a Thomson's gazelle and a bush duiker.
Mongooses and squirrels of uncertain species, as well as porcupines, genets, baboons and vervet monkeys (which - miraculously - had bred on the day before I visited) are among the more commonplace mammals on show.
