On January 1, 2006 the towns of Tano and Sadowara from Miyazaki District and the town of Takaoka from Higashimorokata District merged into the city of Miyazaki.

Nango (南郷, also transliterated as Nangou) is also the name of another town (see Nangou, Miyagi) as well as three villages in Japan (see Nangou, Aomori, Nangou, Fukushima, and Nango, Higashiusuki, Miyazaki).
The town was established as a village in 1889 by merging Taninokuchi, Wakimoto, Katagami, Nienami, Tsuyano, and Nakamura Villages, then promoted to a town in 1940.
It combined with Saigo, Miyazaki and Kitago, Higashiusuki, Miyazaki and became the city of Misatochyou, Miyazaki.
