NANJANGUD: It was a busy Sunday for the police and farmers, who gathered in their hundreds at Atwal barrage across the river Kabini, 15 km from here.
The farmers, from Nanjangud, Mysore and Tirumakudalu Narsipur taluks, succeeded in forcing the water resource department to release water into the Ramapur main canal.
Officials present at the spot clarified that the 70 cusecs of water diverted from Kabini is intended to meet the drinking water and other domestic needs of villages lining the 50-km long Ramapur canal, and not for irrigation purpose.

The gauge conversion work between Mysore and Nanjangud is part of Indian Railways’ exercise to replace the metre gauge between Mysore and Chamarajanagar with broad gauge as part of the unigauge policy introduced by the Railways.

Nanjangud was a small town about thirteen miles from Mysore city and situated on a river called Kapila which is a tributary of the great river, Kaveri, a big river of our Mysore State.
Nanjangud had a very big old Hindu temple built of granite stones, the main diety being Shiva (local name Nanjundeswara), and minor dieties being Shiva's consort Parvathi, Vishnu, Ganesha (Shiva's elephant-headed son), and Saraswathi (Sharada, goddess of learning).
The whole tall pyramidal structure is intricately carved, and delicate figures of gods and goddesses of terracota are embossed on it.

The young family left for Nanjangud by railway train, and camped in the traveller's bungalow called the Residency which was a beautiful colonial style building on the banks of the river Kapila situated behind the Nanjangud Railway Station building.
The servants of the travellor's bungalow or the Residency as it was called, ran to the office of the sub-divisional officer of Nanjangud subdivision which was not far away to tell the sad news of Dasappa's disappearance in the river waters.
My parents lived in Nanjangud from 1925 till the end of their lives.This was what the two children of Dasappa were told most probably by their grandparents Cunigal Ramaswamia (Ayyavaru)and Ammanna, and by their father's father Sitaramia (Annawaru), his widowed sister Achhakka and their two uncles Kittanna and Nanjappa and their aunt Sharade.

NANJANGUD: In a filmi chase and rescue mission, the Mysore district police and their counterparts in Chamarajanagar district arrested two of a gang of nine dacoits, who had waylaid a Kozhikode-bound doctor and assaulted him before decamping with some cash, on the outskirts of the temple town, in the wee hours of Monday.
Kozhikode-based Dr Mehboob was heading towards his destination at about 11.45 pm on Sunday, when his vehicle was waylaid by the gang of dacoits travelling in two vehicles, at Kalale Gate on the outskirts of Nanjangud.
Within two hours, the police were able to catch hold of two dacoits — Abdulla and Mohan Kuttan, residents of Kerala, who were travelling in the car.

I have not seen the car festival of Jagannath of Puri, but I have seen the car festival of Nanjundeshwara of Nanjangud, where my parents lived for about sixty years.
I have already described the temple of Nanjundeshwara in Nanjangud, which is a very beautiful example of a big magnificient temple built in the South Indian Chola style.
Once a year, usually in the month of April, the exact day being determined by the astrologers, there is a big festival in Nanjangud, centering around the temple, and it is called Doddajatre.

Mr Venu Srinivasan, Managing Director, TVS Motor Company, and the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, at the launch of the prototype of the proposed three-wheeler at the company's plant in Mysore on Tuesday.
Announcing the project at the inauguration of the second phase of its existing plant in Nanjangud, the TVS Motor Company Managing Director, Mr Venu Srinivasan, said the company plans to set up the new plant within 18 months.
Mr Srinivasan said the company expects to achieve a turnover of around Rs 2,000 crore from the new plant in Nanjangud, he said adding that around 6,000 jobs will be created directly and indirectly with the setting up of this plant.
