Nannayya   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The advanced and well developed language used by Nannayya suggests that Nannayya Mahabharatamu may not be the beginning of Telugu literature.
Even though Brahmins and their Sanskrit were respected during and after the Satavahana Dynasty, Sanskrit and the Brahmin traditions remained limited to Brahmins, temples and king's court because they were not imposed and were alien to the common man. When Satavaahanas commenced their rule, the official language was Prakrit.
Nannayya was the first to translate a Sanskrit text into Telugu language and he rightly holds the titles Aadi Kavi (the First Poet) and Vaaganusaasanudu (the dictator of the language).

 Tikkana
The specialty of his style of writing is that it is mostly Telugu, unlike Nannayya.
Nannayya’s work was mostly sanskritized, with difficult Sanskrit words.
Tikkana’s other literary contributions include Vijayasenamu, Kavivaagbandhamu, Krishnasatakamu, etc. Though he was second to Nannayya in attempting to translate Mahabharatamu and second poet among the Trinity of Poets, he is second to none in his political, religious and literary accomplishments.

i remember reading an article in a telugu university journal that claims that pampa bharatam actually inspired nannayya in more than one way to take up bharata racana.
it seems that nannayya was peeved by pampa's treatment of bharatam in a non-dhArmik(english-telugu samasam!) way.
it was claimed in that article narayana bhattu was a scholar of kannada and his main job was to help nannayya in the study and comparison of pampa bharatam to his own version.
