Nano reef - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A nano reef is a reef tank of less than 30 gallons.
The exact limit that distinguishes a nano reef from a regular reef is somewhat ill-defined (some claim that anything less than 40 gallons would qualify), but 30 gallons seems to be the generally accepted limit.
Nano reefs have become quite popular in recent years among fishkeeping hobbyists, primarily because of low costs, smaller size, and maintainability.

 Nano Reef FAQ
For a nano reef aquarium however, VHO lighting is probably the least appropriate simply because the smallest available bulb length, 18", is too long for most nano reef aquariums.
Because of the small volume of water that is in a nano reef, water changes are significantly less stressful to perform than it would be on a bigger tank.
For a non-mobile nano reef aquarium, meaning the tank will stay in its current position for years instead of months, a sand bed about three inches thick would be an excellent start.

How to Set Up a Natural Nano Reef System   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Fortunately, a nano reef is dirt cheap when you compare it to a 55 gallon marine ready tank, which requires a sump, plumbing, the built-in overflow, specially designed stand, and often an expensive protein skimmer.
Nanos are much easier to move and break down than larger marine systems, with all their parts, plumbing, and under-tank apparatus.
Gobies and clownfish are staples to nano reefs, but the larger reef safe fish like tangs are not suitable for small systems because they grow large and need open spaces for swimming.

Nano reef aquaria are not a new thing, but thanks to advances in reef keeping they are quite popular lately.
I learned that nano reefs are wonderful and easier in many ways than a full size reef if you can keep up with the demanding water changes, but the temperature instability was in the end too much.
About 4 months after the first nano I began setting up a 20 gallon nano, and about 6 months after that began planning a "large" tank-80 gallons (now I think of 300 plus as "large" in marine aquaria).

Nano Reef Aquarium: Aquarium Equipment and Supplies - Aqua Buys
Lighting is important in a nano reef as most of the corals kept in these style aquariums require light to survive.
Adding trace elements to your nano reef aquarium may be necessary as the aquarium becomes populated and begins to deplete these elements more rapidly.
One of the keys to keeping a successful nano reef is to keep the bio load low and not overstock the aquarium with too many animals.

Q-tanks are very bare bones, with a bare bottom, a powerhead or better yet a HOB filter to use carbon in the chance you use a medication, and a plastic plant or a terracotta pot or two for the fish to feel secure.

Granted that nanos can be convenient at initial cost and size, but chances are a novice would be frustrated with the instability and quit before going deeper into the hobby.
Nanos can also serve as an efficient display for animals that would not be easily viewed or fed in a large display such as Harlequin Shrimp (Hymenocera picta) or Sexy Shrimp (Thor amboinensis).
Nanos can also make great remote refugiums for larger systems; whether it be culturing macro algae for Tangs or providing a fishless habitat for microfauna to procreate (inline refugiums can serve these purposes as well).

In a larger Reef you see large corals, fish rocks and such, but what you don’t really see is the different forms of life on the rocks.
However, in a larger reef there eyes aren’t focused on the small crevices in the rock, there eyes are focused on the large corals which have fish swimming trough them.
Anemones aren’t good nano inhabitants as they grow fast and will move around and in such a small tank, probably sting most of the corals and such Also, after it releases its waste it will pollute the tank if your filtration is not top of the line.

Like with larger reefs, adequate water circulation is absolutley essential - probably more so when you consider the reduced surface area and that you may have temperature spikes, which will result in lower levels of dissolved oxygen.
