  What is a nanometer?
A nanometer is used to measure things that are very small.
For example a water molecule is less than one nanometer.
The molecules that are released from the cookie when it bakes are less than a nanometer in size and so they are carried through the air to our noses because they are so small.

EETimes.com - Down to the wire -- requirements for nanometer design implementation
Nanometer routers must explicitly provide for variable width and variable spacing, and they must be capable of adapting to the requirements of copper, multiple vias, OPC, phase-shift masking (PSM), and CMP.
Nanometer designs are extremely susceptible to IR drop because power and ground wire resistivity increases with decreasing geometries, while the overall power supply voltage decreases.
Nanometer routers must explicitly provide for variable width and variable spacing and must be capable of adapting to the requirements of copper wires, multiple vias, optical proximity correction (OPC), phase-shift masks (PSM), and CMP processes.

 Silver Colloids: Definition of Terms
A nanometer is the unit of measure used to measure the wavelength of visible light.
Such measurement provides a histogram type plot whose x-axis is size in nanometers and y-axis shows the percentage of particles of that size.
electronvolts have a wavelength of 0.004 nanometers enabling a resolution of 0.2 - 0.5 nm to be achieved.

EETimes.com - Nanometer IC routing requires new approaches
A viable router for nanometer design must be able to quickly deliver accurate physical wire information, and be accessible throughout the complete design flow from register transfer level design to detail routing and final sign-off.
A nanometer router must be scalable and be able to leverage the power of today's typical design hardware environments, which can consist of a mixture of multi-CPU machines, and both centralized and decentralized computer farms.
In the nanometer era, look to new-generation routing technologies that combine high performance and capacity with the integration of congestion, timing, SI prevention, and correction algorithms as the best means of getting to design closure quickly.

The Nanometer is a web-based tool that allows researchers and product developers (and others interested) to carry out a brief societal assessment of nanotechnological applications prior to market release.
Based on extensive research and stakeholder consultation the Nanometer presents the key findings of the Nanologue project along a limited number of guiding questions that help to rapidly assess potential societal benefits and impacts of new nanotechnology-based applications already during the proposal or research and development phase.
Unlike commonly used product assessment approaches the Nanometer focuses on those topics that are dominating the societal discussion on nanotechnologies (NT), including health and environment, customer and societal benefits, product stewardship, or transparency.

 What's Nanotechnology?
When characteristic structural features are intermediate between isolated atoms and bulk materials in the range of about one to 100 nanometers, the objects often display physical attributes substantially different from those displayed by either atoms or bulk materials.
To consider the interactions among atoms in the nanometer scale, we need to introduce quantum mechanics and each atom has to be treated as a unit.
A typical example is the carbon nanotube, which is made of concentrical cylindrical graphite sheets with a diameter range from one to 400 nanometers and length of a few micrometers.

oe magazine - toward a standard nanometer   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Part of the challenge of nanometer metrology is that each metrology tool has its own strengths and weaknesses.
Profilometer and AFM transducers with good stability do not have the sensitivity to observe a nanometer, and transducers with good sensitivity are not stable enough for reliable and usable measurements.
If the checkout with a CDA had not been performed, it is likely that all of the interferometer's installation, alignment, and operational errors would have been attributed to the magnetostrictive actuators under test, giving a very false impression of their behavior.

08.27.2003 - Nanometer-sized particles change crystal structure when wet
BERKELEY – As scientists shrink materials down to the nanometer scale, creating nanodots, nanoparticles, nanorods and nanotubes a few tens of atoms across, they've found weird and puzzling behaviors that have fired their imaginations and promised many unforeseen applications.
All these particles are small, ranging from nanometers to microns - millionths of a meter - across.
Zhang developed molecular dynamics models to study the reaction of ZnS nanoparticles to surface binding, and predicted that nanoparticles grown to around 3 nanometers across would be most sensitive to surface water.

ZDNet India > Insight > hardware > AMD launches its 65-nanometer chips
Up next: 45 nanometers By moving into production with its first 65-nanometer chips, AMD can start to try to erode that advantage.
By the middle of next year, all of the chips coming out of AMD's Fab 36 in Dresden, Germany--one of the two fabs AMD has there--will be only 65-nanometer chips.
One thing that could make the transition to 45 nanometers easier for both companies is that the transition won't likely be as radical as it could have been.

Nanometer Yield Enhancement Begins In The Design Phase
For these nanometer designs, traditional corrections applied after tapeout are simply ineffective, requiring more broadly based development strategies.
Higher-frequency signals in nanometer wires increase the SI impact of crosstalk and coupling on circuit timing and function as well.
But beyond implementing improved design techniques, improving yield in nanometer designs depends increasingly on improved design centering, more accurate parasitic extraction, reliable analysis of power and SI effects, and using design recommendations from silicon foundries.

ITworld.com - Chip vendors prepare for 90 nanometer era
The shift to 0.09 microns, or 90 nanometers as it is commonly called, will enable chip designers to shrink the widths of the individual wires and the transistor gates on the chip, said Kevin Krewell, senior editor of the Microprocessor Report in San Jose, California.
IBM is currently sampling 90 nanometer chips using SOI, and plans to ship those chips in the fourth quarter, said Scott Sykes, an IBM spokesman.
The new materials in use at the 90 nanometer level will help chip designers reach new performance heights within their power budgets, but is also cause for concern, Puhakka said.

Nanometer Material Capable of Killing Cancer Cells: Chinese Scientist   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Both Li's academic research and biological cell experiments by Beijing Medical Sciences University prove nanometer particles of hydroxy apatite are effective tools to kill cells of many cancers grown in the lung, liver and esophagus.
Experiments on mice show that seven days after nanometer particle sol of hydroxy apatite were injected into mice with tumor, 66.1 percent of the tumorous cells were brought under control, and phyma disappeared outwardly.
A Chinese scientist has found that nanometer materials of hydroxy apatite, with the particles being 20 nanometers to 100 nanometers in length and being evenly distributed, have the capacity to kill cancer cells in human beings without causing any damage to normal healthy cells.

If AMD is really this close to shipping 90 nanometer Opterons, there could also be a real headache for Intel on the desktop front.

Design and Characterisation of Nanometer Precision Mechanisms - Supplier Data by Queensgate Instrume
Small angular errors can have a large affect at the nanometer level: for example, a tilt of just 1 ┬Árad with an offset of 1 mm gives a 1 nm position error.
This is important for the stage to have metrological capability at the nanometer level.
Some of the technologies used in Queensgate’s nanometer precision mechanisms have been introduced and discussed to explain how a metrological capability at nanometer or even sub-nanometer level can be achieved with the NanoMechanisms.
