A nanoshell is a composed of a spherical core of a particular coumpond surrounded by a shell of a few nanometer of thickness.
Indeed the thickness of the shell is tailored to be in the Near Infra Red area that correspond to a biological window.
In the litterature it is often refered to gold nanoshell with a a dielectric core (gold sulfide,silicon dioxide,...).

In collaboration with Jennifer West in the Rice Bioengineering Department, Metal Nanoshells are being used as optically addressable biosensors, as active media in photo-thermally triggered drug delivery devices, and as the basis of a new bioassay technology which can sample whole blood, a property which is capable of revolutionizing current bioassay technology.
