  Nantgarw
Nantgarw is a small village about eight miles north of Cardiff and four miles from Pontypridd, in the parish of Eglwysilan.
It is supposed that he chose Nantgarw because he wanted to guard the secret of the manufacture of this porcelain, and because it was located on the route of the Canal.
Nantgarw porcelain was known as artificial soft from the nature of its paste or body which could be potted very thinly and was made to Billingsley's secret formula: a synthetic mixture of alkaline and aluminum silicates with added bone ash.

The Nantgarw porcelain factory was established at the little village of Nantgarw, near Cardiff, in 1811 by that vagrant porcelain painter William Billings ley and a little group of associates who had been induced to support the scheme.
These flowers were painted in the Billingsley manner, so often seen on Derby china, where a number of blossoms grouped in composition are realistically rendered in rich colouring, or else they were painted in the Young manner, single flowers being copied most meticulously as though intended to serve as illustrations of botanical specimens.
Molded ornament in low relief was often employed and, in many cases, the relief was left in the white, the colored decorations occupying the smooth surfaces.

The manufacture of porcelain at Nantgarw was begun in 1813 by William Billingsley and Samuel Walker.
Billingsley was born in Derby in 1758, and became an outstanding painter on porcelain at the Derby works, but left there to work in Mansfield and later at Torksey, Linconshire, where it's thought he first came into contact with Samuel Walker.
Owing to the nature of the paste however, many pieces were distorted or completely ruined during the first firing, and with so little resources, the two partners were soon in financial difficulties.

Nantgarw lies north of Cardiff just off the A470 on the route towards Pontypridd and Merthyr.

Most of the local heavy industry vanished in the later part of the 20th century, including the former Nantgarw Colliery; the area today serves as a commuting area for Cardiff and the nearby Treforest industrial estates.

Having found a new backer, Billingsley started to produce beautiful but costly, soft paste porcelain at Nantgarw, near Cardiff in south Wales, in 1814, however within the same year he was compelled to transfer the manufacture to the Swansea pottery of L.W Dillwyn.
Stylistically, the early wares of Billingsley had much in common with French porcelain of the Empire period, but a large amount of Nantgarw porcelain was ruined by the over ornate decoration added in London by the decorators employed by the china dealers Mortlocks of Oxford street.
Josiah Spode was born in 1733 and at the age of sixteen he was apprentice to Thomas Whieldon.
