Toyama is the leading industrial prefecture on the Japan-sea coast, and has the industrial advantage of cheap electricity.
On November 1, 2004, the municipalities of Fukuno, Inami, Johana, Inokuchi, Kamitaira, Taira and Toga (all from Higashitonami District) and Fukumitsu from Nishitonami District merged to form the new city of Nanto.
On April 1, 2005, the towns of Osawano and Oyama from KaminiikawaDistrict and the towns and villages of Fuchu, Hosoiri, Yamada and Yatsuo (all from Nei District) merged with the old city of Toyama to form the new city of Toyama.
As of 2000, the towns and villages that merged to form the city had an estimated total population of 60,182 with an average density of 89.98 persons per km².
As of August 1, 2005, the population of Nanto is 58,813 persons.
Nanto is also a small town located in the province of Vicenza in the Veneto region of north-eastern Italy.
