Nantucket Sound plan gets a boost (February 11, 2003)
The notion of declaring Nantucket Sound a marine sanctuary is not new.
A report prepared by the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown concludes Nantucket Sound has lost none of its importance as a marine resource area, which is the reason a marine sanctuary was first proposed several years ago.
Delahunt said the center's report "provides the basics to draft legislation and begin the process for Nantucket Sound's formal designation as a sanctuary," with the specific proviso that traditional fishing and recreational boating uses would not be curtailed.

Town seeks to dredge sand from Nantucket Sound - The Boston Globe
Barnstable officials who have been fighting to protect Nantucket Sound from the impact of a proposed wind farm are now seeking to use the sound for commercial purposes themselves -- by dredging sand from the shoals being evaluated for the wind energy project.
And if Nantucket Sound is declared open to commercial development, they say, the town might as well take advantage of it, too.
Cape Wind's proposal is opposed by many Cape and island residents who fear that the beauty of the sound will be marred by the towers and say it is unfair to cede the ocean to for-profit development.

Should We Build A Wind Farm On Nantucket Sound - Center for Global Food Issues (CGFI)
Proponents say the Nantucket windmills would replace two of the region's dirtiest electric power plants and set an example of how to eliminate the use fossil fuels and save the planet from man-made global warming.
Fortunately, the Nantucket wind farm doesn't matter, except as a demonstration of how difficult it would be to actually get rid of fossil fuels.
The wind farm proposed for Nantucket Sound would provide 75 percent of the cape and islands' energy without emitting asthma-causing pollution, spilling oil in the water or producing any of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

"Nantucket Sound is a flat body of water surrounded by lots of other flat bodies of water, all the way to Europe.
One has to wonder if the writer of "Nantucket Sound is no Yellowstone" and pro wind advocates would still state that the opposition to the wind farm is and always has been about the rich people's view and that the Nantucket is no Yellowstone.

Nantucket Sound Wind Farm Plan Divides Activists - by Dennis Avery - The Heartland Institute
The New England social elite consistently advocates industrial wind farms everywhere in the country except in their own backyard, and they are fighting intensely against a proposed wind farm in Nantucket Sound off the coast of Martha's Vineyard.
Covering 24 square miles and negatively affecting the ocean floor, migratory birds, navigation, fishing, tourism, and the aesthetic beauty of Nantucket Sound, the proposed wind farm would not produce enough electricity for even the area's beach towns.
Another politically connected Nantucket homeowner, Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander (R), called the wind turbines "gigantic public nuisances." To Alexander's credit, his opposition is not a mere exercise of Not in My Backyard.

Cape Wind Associates chose this site-in Nantucket Sound between Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket-for its unique combination of attributes necessary to support offshore turbines using current technology.
The 420-megawatt wind farm would be the largest renewable energy project in New England, and one of the largest offshore wind farms proposed anywhere in the world.1 At its most landward point the array of 130, 426-foot turbines would be four miles offshore in federal waters.
Residents, business owners, and some environmental interests opposed to the wind farm object to the "industrialization" of Nantucket Sound and potential impacts to navigation, marine life, migratory birds, tourism, and property values.

OUR VIEW: Wind turbines in Nantucket Sound
The debate over a proposed wind farm on Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound has been based largely on aesthetics and supposition.
The distance of the turbines from land add the needed perspective: from Nantucket, 13 miles; from Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard, 9 miles; from mainland Cape Cod, 6 miles (Cotuit) or 5.5 miles (Barnstable).
To those who wonder why beautiful Nantucket Sound was chosen for the country's first offshore wind farm, the answer is simple economics.

Established Massachusetts public policy favoring the protection of the Sound makes clear that it is not in the best interest of the Commonwealth to permit the development of large-scale wind energy with so little meaningful assessment of the costs and benefits to the region.
