Nanumea is 295miles from Funafuti, and accessible only by sea.
Elements of the 7th USAAF and a battalion of Seabees, from by the USN Carriers Independence and Princeton, occupied Nanumea between 18 and 28 August 1943.

When Tefolaha arrived at Nanumea he thought that the island was uninhabited but he soon found some footprints in the sand which he followed until he came upon two women, Pai and Vau.
Nanumea traditional history tells that about 1700-1750 Taitai, Uakeia's son, was more successful and landed on the island together with his sister Teputi and a fellow warrior from Onotoa named Temotu.
As it is, the inhabitants of Nanumea, where the whole population again lives, are proud of their mosquito-free island and prefer the long trip to Lakena to obtain pulaka to being pestered by mosquitoes.

Nanumea Island with an estimated population of 918 is the northernmost of Tuvalu's nine atolls.
Tarawa, 840 kilometres from Nanumea, was a significant leap closer for the bombers than the 1,150 kilometres from Funafuti and 1,700 kilometres from Canton Island, Phoenix Group, the only other American base which was even remotely in the vicinity.
Nanumea was the subject of Japanese bombing raid but the people themselves were unharmed as Lakena was not bombed at any time during the hostility.

The Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless shown was photographed in March 1975 on the Pacific island of Nanumea in Tuvalu (formerly part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands).
The fuselage of the SBD-5 was sitting off the northeast end of the now-overgrown bomber strip Nanumea was a B-24 Liberator base with the outer wings stacked nearby.
Like several other islands in the Gilbert and Ellice, Nanumea boasted a variety of interesting aviation artifacts including B-24 and C-47 fuselage sections used as kitchens and as shelters for dried pandanas leaves which are used for roofing thatch.

Beginning in October 1942, U.S. forces built airbases on the islands of Funafuti, Nanumea, and Nukufetau.
The airstrip in the capital of Funafuti, originally built by the U.S. during the war, is still in use, as is the "American Passage" that was blasted through Nanumea's reef by SeaBees assisted by local divers.
In 1974 the Ellice Islanders voted for separate British dependency status as Tuvalu, separating from the Gilbert Islands which became Kiribati upon independence.

Anne maintains a long term research commitment to the small Polynesian community of Nanumea, Tuvalu (Polynesia), where she and Keith Chambers have been doing periodic field research since 1973.
Their research collaboration has been (and is expected to continue to be) broadly ethnographic but Anne has particular interest in village-level economics, fertility and health issues, gender, and the interplay between values and social organization.
She and Keith are currently doing final final revisions on The Unity of Heart, their ethnography about Nanumea, which is due to be published soon by Waveland Press.
