The deal for the takeover of the two newspapers, Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press, is due to be inked on Thursday, but mounting opposition is threatening to scuttle it.
Nanyang's circulation at the end of June 2000 was 177,000, while China Press sells 127,000 copies.
Nanyang was for many years the top-selling Chinese paper until it was overtaken by Sin Chew Jit Poh, which now has a circulation of 276,000.

Nanyang Press publishes the "Nanyang Siang Pau" and "China Press", while Tiong owns Nanyang's rival, Sin Chew Media Corporation, which publishes the largest circulated Chinese-language newspaper, "Sin Chew Daily", and "Guang Ming Daily".
Readers of Chinese-language newspapers are also more educated on the dangers of political intervention in the media, which was why the MCA's purchase of Nanyang Press in 2001 created a huge controversy and raised strong objections within and outside the party (see IFEX alert of 14 June 2001).
Nanyang Press's previous owner, financial group Hong Leong Holdings, was forced to sell the company to the MCA after the Chinese press was blamed for the ruling coalition's unexpected defeat in a crucial by-election in 2000.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Describing MCA's takeover of two Chinese newspapers under the Nanyang group in 2001 as a debacle, the party's former deputy president wants former president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik to apologise to the Chinese community for it, saying Dr Ling was "solely responsible" for the controversial deal.
Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek told a press conference Thursday that Dr Ling was responsible for bulldozing the acquisition of Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press, owned by Nanyang Press Holdings Bhd, and which the party's investment arm Huaren Holdings Bhd finally disposed of on Tuesday.
Lim also said that the Chinese community in the country still had not forgiven the MCA for acting against their wishes, even prompting a boycott of Nanyang Siang Pau.

We call on all Malaysians to oppose the takeover of Nanyang and China Press on the grounds that it demolishes further the notion of press freedom and leads to a further erosion of democracy in Malaysia.
Given that much of the mainstream media is already politically owned or linked, it is vital for Nanyang Siang Pau and China Press to remain relatively independent of partisan interests.
