  Nap Rucker (1884-1970)
Largely forgotten today, Nap Rucker was one of the premier left-handed baseball pitchers in the major leagues during the first two decades of the twentieth century.
George Napoleon Rucker was born to Sarah Hembree and John Rucker, a Confederate veteran, on September 30, 1884, in Crabapple, a small town in Fulton County near Roswell and Alpharetta.
Rucker was elected unopposed as Roswell's mayor during the Great Depression, and he brought the town its first supply of running water.

 Player Profile: Nap Rucker
Player notes: Nap Rucker was a workhorse lefty for the Brooklyn Superbas in the early years of the 20th Century.
Handicapped by the anemic Brooklyn offense of his era, he lost as many games as he won (134), but his quality as a pitcher is evident from the fact the he bettered the league average in ERA in all but one season of his career.
In retirement, Rucker returned to his native Georgia, where he was a successful businessman and also scouted for the Dodgers.

Rucker was even better in his sophomore season, somehow winning 17 games for a team that lost 101.
Nap claimed he learned the pitch with Augusta when he accidentally gripped the ball the wrong way, but another story attributes its origin to a 1913 thumb injury that forced him to change his grip.
Rucker was a segregationist Democrat; as one writer put it, "he could not be anything else politically and still be a Georgian." As mayor during the New Deal, the former pitcher was instrumental in bringing running water to Roswell and later served as the town's water commissioner for several decades.

 Legends of the Game
Nap was considered the 'greatest lefty' of his era by no other than the legendary Hall of Fame manager, John J. McGraw.
Even more remarkable was that Nap's records were made for a second-division team that was always near the bottom in the standings.
With a remarkable career ERA of 2.42, Nap was considered the greatest Dodger 'Lefty' until the arrival of Hall of Fame pitcher and Dodger great, Sandy Koufax.
