For decades, American wines made from this grape were labeled as ``Gamay Beaujolais.'' In the late 1960's, researchers at UCD decided that the grape known as ``Napa Gamay'' was the true Gamay grape, and that the ``Gamay Beaujolais'' vine was actually a clone of Pinot noir.
Gamay Beaujolais is a clone of Pinot Noir, and Napa Gamay is an as yet unidentified variety, which is neither Gamay nor Pinot noir.
The ``Napa Gamay'' grape variety was positively identified by the FPMS as Valdiguie, although it is not widely known by this name in the United States.

Napa Gamay has been positively identified by the FPMS as Valdiguie, although it is not widely known by this name.
ATF believes that allowing the use of the optional designation ``Gamay Beaujolais'' in direct conjunction with the actual varietal type designation (Pinot noir or Napa Gamay), as well as an appellation of origin reflecting the true origin of the grapes, will not be confusing or misleading to consumers.

As a wine Gamay tends to be paler and bluer than most other reds, with relatively high acidity and a simple but vivacious aroma of freshly picked red fruits, often overlaid by the less subtle smells associated with rapid, oxygen-free fermentation such as bananas, boiled sweets, and acetate.

Gamay emerged as the poor man's Pinot; it was widely planted on the Haute Cote and on the plains of Burgundy by peasants who rented lesser vineyard sites from their Lords.
By 1855, 87percent of the Cote d'Or was planted to Gamay Noir a Jus Blanc.
But with the reorganization of French vineyards in the latter half of the 19th century, Gamay was once again banned from the great sites of Burgundy...this time by the new aristocracy, including some of the same families whose Gamay vineyards had supplied the wherewithal to purchase the world's most pricey sites planted to Pinot noir.

Although the grape growing districts in Napa and Sonoma Counties are similar geologically and climatologically, the industries in the two areas have developed differently and have played different roles in their respective economies.
In Napa County the guesstimate is that currently around twenty or twenty-five percent of the crop is machine harvested, with some increase each year.
In some Napa "boutique" wineries which are also selectively hand harvesting their grapes, owners bridge the gap in vineyard jobs by assigning field labor to landscaping and maintenance jobs around tasting rooms and other public areas, effectively creating year-round employment from a series of seasonal tasks.

James T. Lapsley has concentrated on the manner in which the premier California wines in Napa Valley evolved in a few short years compared to the 2,000 or more years wine has been known to civilized man. Napa wines are recognized as equal or superior to the great wines of France, or indeed anywhere.
What is surprising is that while many of the original families no longer own these labels, corporations, even large ones, have maintained the viticultural tradition in Napa Valley and they have also improved the varietals which were the basic stock of their superb wines.
Since the glorious years of the Napa innovators, many talented and moneyed individuals have been attracted to the wine making possibilities along the west coastÑfrom the Washington state whites and reds to the Oregon Pinots and down the coast to the border of Mexico.

 Gamay Beaujolais Final Rule Text
In the late 1960's, researchers at UCD decided that the grape known as ``Napa Gamay'' was the true Gamay grape, and that the ``Gamay Beaujolais'' vine was actually a clone of Pinot noir.
While many commenters in favor of retention of the term ``Gamay Beaujolais'' stated that consumer recognition of this wine was good, none of the comments offered specific evidence, such as consumer surveys, on what consumers understood to be the varietal significance of the term.
ATF would like to clarify that it does not agree with those commenters who suggested that use of the ``Gamay Beaujolais'' designation is misleading as to the origin of the wine, or that ATF's prior or interim policy with respect to this name is in violation of the international obligations of the United States.

Until the 1970s, the red vinifera grape variety traditionally identified as Gamay Beaujolais was thought by California vineyardists to be the true grape of France's Beaujolais region.
Another grape, the Napa Gamay, which is also not truly from Beaujolais, took on the standing of the true Beaujolais grape when that which we call Gamay Beaujolais turned out to be Pinot Noir.
The wines now made from Napa Gamay may also be called Gamay Beaujolais even though it, like the Gamay Beaujolais, is not from Beaujolais.
